Welcome:

Welcome to those who just joined the list. If you have any
questions or concerns, please let us know.

There have been no DLV general mailings since September. No,
you have not missed anything. :) This will also most likely
be the last general mailing before the first of the new year.
. . .

Plans are moving along for DLV 2009 and are on target. The
emphasis this coming year will be on keeping things fresh,
with a good mix of old favorite activities, some with new
twists, and things we've never done before.

The big burning question seems to be along the line of how
the state of the economy will affect DLV.

We don't know and we won't know for sure until DLV happens,
but I think it's safe to say that our turnout will be somewhat
lower than it's been over the past few years. We're not letting
this stop us at all! We've had very successful events when our
attendance was in the 100-120 range and even lower.

Remember that we had a highly successful DLV in April of 2002,
well into the economic downturn which followed the attacks in
September of 2001.

The doomsayers' predictions of such things as $7.00 gasoline
and $1200.00 domestic airfare have not materialized, at least
so far. This helps with transportation costs. A quick check of
airfares over the DLV period shows amazingly consistent fares
in the $300-ish range from a sampling of major airports.

We will do our best to plan things to keep costs under control
as much as we can.

If there is a silver lining in this cloud, it's that the
hotel room rates for Las Vegas are quite reasonable, and
are actually lower in many cases than they have been over
the past several years. See notice below for special DLV
rates at the St. Tropez.

If anybody has any questions or concerns, please let us
know.

Suggested Hotels for DLV 2009:

Our ORG group has just voted to suggest the following hotels
(in alphabetical order) for DLV 2009:

Alexis Park
Gold Coast
Imperial Palace
Paris
St. Tropez

These are, as the name implies, suggestions. There's no
requirement that you stay in our suggested hotels. You may
stay anywhere you wish. DLV, unlike most other TG events,
is not centered around a particular hotel. We make these
suggestions for those who want to be near others in the
group, and for those who want to know where previous DLV
people have stayed and received good service.

Details on the 2009 suggested hotels appear on the web:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlv2009/2009hotels.html

We have a very good mix this year. We have two midscale
casino-hotels, one on-Strip, the other off-Strip, which
are known to be decent and affordable.

We have two smaller off-Strip nongaming hotels for those
who do not want a crowded casino-hotel and those who want
a certain degree of seclusion.

We also have one more upscale option, for those who want
something a bit nicer.
. . .

Some may ask why the Sahara, which has been a DLV suggested
hotel for many years, does not appear on the list this year.
It failed to get a second to the nomination this year and was
eliminated from consideration.

Reason for the lack of the second is that plans for renovation
of the Sahara are iffy and they were (at the time of discussion)
not accepting reservations past February. Things are just too
uncertain to recommend it this year!

Special room rates at St. Tropez:

Nora has again negotiated special DLV rates at the St. Tropez
for DLV attendees this coming May.

As Nora writes:

>Now as for the really important news, the hotel rates for the
>DLV. A room rate of 50 dollars per night was given for the DLV.
>This is quite a reduction from the past few years.

>When making reservations we are to call 702-369-5400 (main
>number of the hotel) and tell the operator that the room is
>being booked for the Diva Las Vegas or DLV and to mention his
>name (Randy), who is the General Manager.

Nora also reports that renovations are underway at the St.
Tropez, and that an on-site restaurant is under construction.

Please join us in thanking Nora for making these arrangements!

DLV 2008 follow-up pages:

Diva Las Vegas 2008 follow-up pages are on line. They may be
accessed via a link from the main DLV web site:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/

Thanks to all who contributed photos from this year's event.

Over 1200 photos are included on the follow-up pages! These were
selected from almost 1800 photos which were submitted, making
this the largest collection of DLV photos for any year so far.
90% of those that were not selected for the final pages were
near-duplicates of those which were.
