Be Flexible on Air Travel, But Lock in Fares

Time is running out to book a fare before prices go up. Jet fuel has
only one direction to move in -- up.

If you can have flexibility in arrival and departure dates, and in
departure airport, you can save some money. Many DLV girls are very
experienced travelers and able to sniff out bargains. If you haven't
had to do that for awhile, here's an example:

Depart Saturday 4/15 from Austin TX and return Monday 4/24: $300.96

Depart Saturday or Sunday or Monday from Dallas-Ft. Worth airport (DFW)
and return Tuesday 4/25: $218

Anybody have any JetBlue fare stories to talk about?

Thanks,

Tina Tawdre

No, but I've been checking fares almost daily, sometimes more than daily.

Jet Blue doesn't serve our area (yet, the Powers That Be have been
courting them, though).

The cheapest from our area is Alegiant, $180-ish RT, but their schedule
sucks, totally. Everything back takes off early in the morning. :( Not
an option.

Next cheapest, $210-ish is Continental, connecting in Houston, not my
idea of a fun time.

Cheapest sane schedule and route is Untied, $250-ish, but I don't wanna
fly them unless there's no alternative.

The the three that are usually cheapest from this area to Las Vegas,
America West, Frontier, and Southwest, are all in the $300-400 range,
depending on flight and the phase of the moon.

Historically, we've seen air fares dip in January or February. It just
doesn't seem to be happening this year. I've checked with our in-house
TAs, who are usually aware of any major movement in price, and they say
the current prices are about the best that can be expected for a while.
They did say they don't expect prices to skyrocket any time soon,
however.

Oh well ...

Tina,

I am in DFW area. What airline is it that has the $218.00 airfare, and
can I come back on Sunday for the same price?

Hugs,

Even if I flew on airlines, I would not want to fly Southwest. Hey,
let's open up the gate and everybody fight over the seats, yeah, that's
a good idea. Then we'll come in with cattle prods and pack your a$$es
in so that we can squeeze a few more in. Then we'll sit on the ramp for
eight hours, because we lost our slot while trying to pack ten more
people into the restrooms and overhead bins.

All of this bargain hunting is the biggest problem with the airlines.
Ever since deregulation, they have had to skimp on service, space and
maintenance because nobody cares about anything but the lowest fare.

Almost nobody. Just as there are a few stores that still sell quality
merchandise, because not everyone wants to buy crap at Wal-mart, there
are a few airlines left that charge a little more and give better
service. I think one of them is called Midwest Air Commuter. If I were
going to fly, I would find out who has the legroom and service and pay
the difference.

I found a Delta flight from Tulsa through Salt Lake for $148. Probably
the buy of the year.

Hi Tootsye,

It's American Airlines. See list below for some various flight times
and flight number combinations. And, yes, it looks like the same fare
is also available when choosing the Sunday return date. I'm getting
this data from www.aa.com (the regular American Airlines booking site),
which does consistently come in lower than Travelocity for the same
flights.

Thanks,

Tina Tawdre

[Moderator's note: The attached capture was unreadable. Please contact
American Airlines to confirm the fares.]

save $20.00! <g>
