Activity highlight -- Side trip to Death Valley:

Between now and DLV, each week (most, anyway) we will cover one of our
activities in detail here in the DLV Discussion Forum.

A link will be posted to these in in the general mailings.

This week we feature our Monday side trip to Death Valley.

This is a rescheduling of our Death Valley trip which was originally
planned for DLV 2005 but had to be postponed due to road closures from
flood damage.

We'll carpool and explore the south end of Death Valley National Park,
with planned stops at Badwater, Devil's Golf Course, Artist's Drive,
the Visitor Center, and Zabriskie Point. It will be warm, but decent
and not nearly as hot as it will be in the summer.

Badwater is the site of the lowest-altitude paved road in the
hemisphere. This will be a very scenic trip. Bring your camera
to capture the scenery!

A brunch stop with several options (buffet, food court, coffee shop)
is planned on the way to Death Valley.

Dress: Casual required, boymode or girlmode. Appropriate shoes required
(flats or athletic), as you will be walking on unpaved surfaces.

It's estimated to be about 6 hours total, so wear something you are
comfortable wearing for several hours.

Cost: Modest donation to your driver's gas fund will be expected, plus a
portion of the park entry fee for your vehicle. Brunch will be on one's
own with several options, all reasonable in price.

This will be the first DLV activity for quite a few of our people. DLV
check-in will be available at the rendezvous point before the trip
departs.

Is it OK to wear an evening gown and spike heels?

Hi Girls: There is precedent for wearing an evening gown in the desert.
I am thinking of the scene from "Priscilla - Queen of the Desert" where
three T-girls climbed a mountain peak in the Great Australian Desert
wearing evening attire. However, they were smart enough to do it in
hiking boots. Kina

I was kidding, but with a serious undertone. Past experiences have
shown me that it is not altogether impossible that someone will show up
for a hiking trip wearing evening dress, or ruffled panties and a pink
parasol. Despite Annie's best attempts to educate, there is always that
one person who just doesn't get it, or doesn't care.

Gee, I dunno, a parasol could come in handy in the
desert...

You could always wear the proverbial "little black dress". I'm sure
there's plenty of hiking boots in black.

Hi Denise: Yes, I was also only kidding. Mostly because it is nigh
impossible to find hiking boots that color-match my evening gowns. Kina

Hi Caitlin: What a novel idea! A little black cocktail dress with
matching hiking or combat boots. The perfect outfit for girls who
occasionally need to kick A--. Just kidding. Kina Micole.

If you're in the desert and need to kick some a--, the ONLY place to
turn for fashion advice is the immortal Tura Satana in Russ Meyers'
"Faster Pussycat,

Kill, Kill". ME-OWWWWW!
