----------

This is a re-run of the 2016 attendee survey with the results limited to
those reporting an approximate age below 50.

17 responses were received from those in that age range, or about 24% of
the total number of responses.

Not everyone answered all questions, so the total responses to each
question may or may not add up to 17.

If you wish to compare these results with those of the attendee base as
a whole, the complete original report is on line here:

Another deeper dive - Survey focus ...

Postby External Poster » Wed Jun 01, 2016 9:15 am

This posting is from: annie
----------

Here are some comments on the "deeper dives" presented over the past
several days.

I'm not commenting on all of the answers, just those which I think have
some significance, and in this case I'm particularly looking for
differences between the re-run with the younger attendees and the main
run for the attendee base as a whole.

I'm ordering these mainly in the order of "most surprise" to least. :)
. . . . . . . . . .

The biggest surprise, to me at least, was the number of total zeroes
in the answers to the following items:

+Do you belong to a local transgender support group?

+I am currently a member.: 0 (11)
+I have previously been a member.: 9 (34)
+I have never been a member.: 8 (26)

Zero, zippo, of the younger folks reported current group membership!

Roughly half of both the overall attendee base and the younger folks
reported previous membership.

+Have you ever attended any of the following transgender community events?

And, absolutely none in this age range reported doing any other TG events
at all!

Somewhat related to the culture is a shift in the popularity of the
various labels of self-identity.

+I consider myself to be primarily a (an) ...

+Crossdresser: 6 (30)
+Transgender(ist): 4 (12)
+Transwoman: 3 (10)
+No-op: 1 (3)
+Gender-nonconforming: 1 (3)
+Bigender: 1 (2)
+Friend of the community or ally: 1 (1)

Somewhat of a decrease in the percentage of those identifying with the
term "crossdresser" and a corresponding increase in the percentage of
those identifying as "transgender" with a smaller increase in those
stating "transwoman" as their label of self-identity.

+Transvestite: 0
+Pre-op: 0
+Post-op: 0
+Drag queen: 0

Absolutely zero reporting the above labels of self-identity as well as
the less-used more contemporary terms.
. . . . .

The relative level of participation in the Big Sister program, or rather
the lack of same among our younger people, was somewhat of a surprise.

+Did you participate in our Big Sister program and if so, did you find it
+to be helpful?

15% of our attendee base as a whole reported being involved in one way or
another with our Big Sister Program. However (comma) ...

+I was a volunteer Big Sister and did not have a positive experience.: 1

Only one of the younger attendees reported any involvement, and said
involvement was not reported as being positive.
. . . . .

+Average length of stay: 4.81 days. (5.36)

Roughly an 11% decrease in time spent at DLV by the younger set. I
really don't know how significant this is.

Here's an interesting comparison ...

+Which of the following best represents the various payments you made
+during the course of your attendance of DLV 2016?

The younger attendees are almost twice as likely to use cash than are
the attendees in general, 47% vs 26%.

As I think back to my own payment method usage, I did not start using
credit cards regularly until I was in my 30s but by the time I reached
40, which is really the lower boundary of our sample set here, I was a
regular plastic user.

Thinking back, credit cards, in my life at least, basically replaced
checks and I found that I used far fewer checks as I graduated from a
30-something to a 40-something.

Now in Las Vegas I know I'm somewhat of an outlier. I started visiting
Las Vegas in my 20s and I always considered it to be mainly a cash
society and I still use cash most of the time for about everything
except for such things as hotel (they ALWAYS want to have a card on
file) and for car rental, where it's close to impossible sans plastic.
. . . . .

Now let's look at the vices. :)

+I am a (an) ...

+Nonsmoker: 13 (66)
+Occasional smoker: 4 (5)
+Regular smoker: 0

This year, almost 92% of those answering the survey stated that they did
not smoke, but we saw a decrease to 76% (increase of smokers) of those
in the younger age brackets who stated that they did not smoke.
. . . . .

+I consider myself to be a (an) ...

+Non-drinker: 2 (7)
+Social drinker: 13 (53)
+Regular drinker: 2 (10)

The percentage of younger respondees reporting imbibing in adult
refreshments was very close to that of the attendee base as a whole,
or 88% vs. 90%. Well within any margin of error.
. . . . .

The younger attendees definitely reported being better connected and
more likely to participate in on-line discussion and such than the
general attendee base as a whole.

+Did you have convenient and reliable e-mail service during DLV, using
+any method?

Only 7% of the younger people reported no email during the event vs. 13%
overall.

+Which of the following BEST describes your electronic
+communication abilities during our event?

0% of the younger attendees reported no connectivity, vs. about 7% of
the overall attendee base.

+Did you participate in the DLV Discussion Forum on the web or the
+associated mailing list?

83% of the younger set, versus 66% of the overall attendee base,
reported participating in the Discussion Forum.

+Do you use MyDLV and if so how much?

Correspondingly, 88% reported using MyDLV compared to 75% of the
attendee base as a whole.

Possibly related (cause or effect here?) ... :) :)

Some of the questions have one answer which indicates that the respondee
is unaware of something that is typically necessary or helpful to being
an informed DLV attendee.

+I have not viewed the DLV web site.: 0
+What maps?: 0
+I never received any phone numbers.: 0
+I don't know what you are talking about.: 0
+What the heck is MyDLV?: 0
+I was unaware the Big Sister program existed.: 0

It appears to be evident that the younger attendees are better informed
and far less likely to be "low information attendees" than the older
ones.
. . . . .

The numbers are too low in the following item to make any definite
conclusions but there was somewhat of a shift away from the Flamingo
toward Paris when considering the younger respondees.

+Flamingo:

+Very comfortable: 4
+Somewhat comfortable: 1

+Paris:

+Very comfortable: 4

It appears that Paris appealed more to the younger attendees than to
the attendee base as a whole.

+Did you take advantage of our special promotional hotel room rates at
+the Flamingo for all or part of your stay?

Only 18% of the younger attendees reported taking advantage of the
special rates at the Flamingo vs. 34% of the attendee base as a whole.
. . . . .

Now about activity enjoyment ...

+What was your level of enjoyment at each of the following activities?

The obvious thing here is that dancing activities most definitely had
lower average ages of participants.

However, there's a "rest of the story" here ... :)

If we average all of the enjoyment ratings for all dance sessions we get
4.7984 for the younger set and 4.809 for all, the difference being not
only well within the margin of error but within the threshold of noise
as well. :)

It appears that EVERYONE, younger and older who participated, enjoyed
the dance activities (4.8 is a very good score particularly with that
many reporting in) but those of younger age were more likely to attend.
. . . . .

+Did you find yourself missing DLV activities because you either got
+into a time crunch or were simply too tired from previous activites?

64% of the younger folks vs. 50% of the attendee base in general
reported occasional or frequent time crunches. (Partying harder the
previous night?) :)
. . . . .

+During the course of the event, did you suffer from an unexpected
+illness or injury which prevented you from fully participating?

7% of the overall survey respondees reported illness or injury, but none
of the younger ones did.
. . . . .

+Did you find the other DLV attendees to be friendly and inclusive?

+Mostly yes: 17

All lesser categories, although down in the single digits or zero in the
main survey tabulation covering all, had zero responses from the younger
set.

All in the lower age range reported the others to be friendly and
inclusive!
. . . . .

+Approximately how much did you spend on accommodations while you were
+attending DLV?

+Approximate average: 516.66 (584.61)

The percentage of decrease is very close to the decrease in average days
attended by the younger folks.

+Approximately how much did you spend on food and non-alcoholic beverages
+while you were attending DLV?

+Approximate average: 287.50 (342.85)

I might conclude that this number supports the premise that the younger
people prefer more moderately-priced dining.

+Approximately how much did you spend on alcoholic beverages while you
+were attending DLV?

+Approximate average: 175.0 (133.7)

Wow, about a 30% increase here! Party animals! :) :) :)

+Approximately how much did you spend on local transportation (rental
+car, taxi rides, Monorail pass, donation to others' fuel funds, etc.)
+while you were attending DLV?

+Approximate average: 141.66 (150.76)

Really not very much difference here. Close to a margin of error call.

+Considering all expenses of all types, what was the total amount you
+spent in order to attend and participate in DLV?

+Approximate average: 2058.33 (2866.92)

Almost a 30% decrease here, about twice of what might be expected when
considering only the shorter time of attendance.

Using these numbers, the under-50s spent about $428 per day to
participate in DLV, compared to $535 per day reported by the attendee
base as a whole. That's about a 20% difference per day and as above,
almost a 30% difference for "total cost of ownership" for the event.

+In general, did you consider DLV 2016 to be reasonable and affordable?

+Yes, definitely: 5 (45)
+Yes, somewhat: 10 (23)

The majority (about 63%) of the overall attendees said that the event
was definitely affordable compared to only 20% of the younger folks.

The percentages of "definitely" and "somewhat" flip-flopped between the
overall attendee base and the younger set.

This does appear to support the belief that the younger folks'
attendance is more constrained by the availability (lack of) of
discretionary funds

+Did you participate in table and/or machine gaming during your
+attendance at DLV?

+None at all: 3 (27)
+Very little: 4 (15)
+Occasionally: 7 (17)
+Frequently: 2 (10)

Unexpectedly, however, only 17% of the younger set reported no gaming
at all, compared to about 38% of the general attendee base.
. . . . .

+Did you think DLV was too long or too short?

+It was too long: 7 (10)
+It was too short: 1 (4)
+It was just about right: 8 (57)

The "too long" answer on this always fascinates me. :) I interpret it to
usually mean "too long for me to afford" or "too long for me to take the
time off" rather than "too long for my attention span" or "too long for
me to be doing girlmode" and such.

For the attendee base as a whole, a significant majority has always
answered "just about right" as long as we have been doing this question,
with the "too long" and "too short" vying for second.

For the younger folks, the "too long" set jumps up to 44%.
. . . . .

"The bottom line is the bottom line", as a former boss of mine used to
say. :)

The following two "bottom line" questions summarize the overall levels
of enjoyment and satisfaction with our event. Of course we want to see
the level of disappointment low and the level of "want to return" high.

+All in all, did DLV 2016 meet your expectations?

+DLV 2016 exceeded my expectations: 9 (31)
+DLV 2016 met my expectations: 7 (37)
+DLV 2016 failed to meet my expectations: 1 (3)

Slightly higher (53% v. 43%) in the "exceeded category", with a slight
(41% v. 52%) in the "met", almost a flip-flop.

The numbers for the "failed" are in the low single digits for both the
younger gang and the group as a whole but if we go on percentages and
accept the "noise", the "failed" percentage is slightly higher among the
younger people.
. . . . .

+Would you attend another DLV?

+Yes, definitely: 11 (50)
+Yes, probably: 4 (16)
+Maybe: 2 (4)
+Probably not: 0 (1)
+Definitely not: 0

Among the overall attendee base, a significant majority (70%) would
definitely attend another and a slightly lower majority (65%) of the
younger attendees are in that category as well.

23% of the overall attendees as well as the younger people are in the
"probably" camp.

If we look at "probably or better", 93% of the attendees as a whole fall
into that group, compared to 88% of the younger attendees. Slightly
lower for the younger folks but well within the same range.

We don't have any younger responses in the "probably not" or lower
categories and only one from the general attendee base so it's very
difficult to form any conclusions here. We're down in the low single
digits for the "maybe" category as well, which, IMAO, is where we should
be. Zero would be ideal, however.

As for the bottom line, yes, the numbers for the younger folks are
slightly lower than those for the overall attendee base, but well within
the same range.

Further comments on any of this?
