Here are some candid comments on the comments and suggestions received
on the recent DLV 2016 attendee survey.

Again, I'm not responding to each and every item.
. . . . . . . . . .

Let's tackle the restroom comments first. (Quick this year!) :)

Overall, I think this year was one of the most incident-free years we've
had in our history, regarding the restroom situation. I heard no
concerns or complaints or reports of incidents during the event. The
objective portion of the survey was clean. Below are the only items I
heard at all this year.

Thanks go out to all for keeping the restroom situation under control!

Two comments here which may or may not be related ...

+Not incident but I saw girls standing to go at the Off Strip.

and

+Several times while I was in a womens restroom I would hear one
+of our "girls" standing to use the bath room and all of the girls
+should be educated on this practice.

If this was indeed isolated to Off The Strip I'm not too concerned about
it since we (DLV group) were the only occupants of the second floor at
the time.

Still, it's poor practice! :( Everyone should know this by now! :(

Now if it was at a venue where there were civilians present, it's
patently un-cool! :(

Each year we seem to get a few comments along this line ...

+I'm still a bit nervous each time I walk into a public bathroom.

+I am always a bit apprehensive when going to the ladies bathroom.

It's a very good thing to be cautious. However, our now 20 year history
shows that if everyone follows good restroom practice, the chance of
being confronted is very low.

Our history also shows that the converse is true. If our people use
restrooms conspicuously and improperly, there's a good chance that a
complaint will be made and action will occur. Using a restroom in
groups, standing in a stall, and conspicuously using a restroom where
our people have gotten the attention of "civilians" are all practices
which have caused our people grief in the past.

As far as other behavior issues, three were reported:

+Your cigare smoker was at it again can something be done about
+this PLEASE

and this one ...

+We must find a way to keep a certain person from wearing a mask at
+mainstream activities. Not sure why she sees the need to put it on in a
+public venue.

and

+And that girl in the mask someone needs to say something Looks real
+creepy in public like we're some kind of a circus sideshow

and

+That mask needs to go! Looks bloody ridiculous!

We hear you loud and clear on both of these issues. We'll be dealing
with both of them in a time and manner appropriate.

+During the Limo drive my wife was a guest. Two of the guests were
+definitely drunk throughout the drive and behaved inappropriately.

Please, if anything like this (or any of the above) happens and it's
making you uncomfortable or impacting your enjoyment of the Limo Tour or
any activity, let the organizers know IMMEDIATELY so something can be
done about it. In the specific case of the Limo Tour, we probably could
have moved you to another car and/or had a "Come To Jesus" chat with the
offending parties. We'll be the "heavy" in cases like this. We want you
to enjoy the activity.

Might as well get this one out of the way next ... :)

+There was a question in regard to whether or not I knew the trip
+to Studios was a sanctioned event.

+The single question made if appear that the creator of the question
+had a slanted view of the subject.

Well, I (Annie) was the one who wrote the question. I did so in response
to a concern raised by one of our senior volunteers shortly before the
event in some back-channel chat that was to the effect that it may be
mistaken for an official part of the DLV program. The purpose of the
question was to find out if it was or was not. That's it.

You'll have to trust me that there was no bias intended in the wording
of the question or the presence of the question. It was merely to answer
a raised question.

Question answered! Case closed! That's it.

+I felt there also should have been a question regarding whether
+those who did attend had a good time and whether they would attend
+again in the future.

Short answer here, if it's not a DLV activity, we won't be tracking the
enjoyment of such here on the survey. :)

Now, one very specific kudo I will give to the person who organized
this.

It was open to all, well-announced, and anyone who was interested was
invited to attend. In too many cases we've had off-schedule activities
that were either poorly-announced or intentionally limited to certain
individuals, and in all cases, many who may have been interested got
left out.

It was also scheduled so it worked well with our schedule, on an
otherwise multi-track evening with no major activities. I would call
this a win-win.

Let's look at Activity comments and suggestions next ...

+Keep working on having a schedule with "fresh" activities.

and

+Also keep up with the new different events. This is what keeps
+Diva special.

and

+it seems that DLV does the same events, year after year.

and

+Great new events this year (Wayne Newton, Pin ball, Off Strip
+Bistro) and great bring-back of old events (Limo, Eritic
+Heritage).

Personally, I thought we had a very good balance this year between new
and different activities, recurring favorites, and reincarnations of
previous favorites.

In the first category, for mid-size activities we had things like Exotic
Car Racing, the Wayne Newton Casa de Shenandoah tour, the Hollywood Car
Museum and the social at Carnaval Court.

For dining and imbibing venues we had several totally new ones this year
including Nora's Cuisine, Center Cut at the Flamingo, Hash House a
Go-Go, SNS Diner, and last but most definitely not least we had the Off
The Strip Bistro for one of our major gatherings.

For the resurrected favorites of previous years we had such things as
Shiloh Horse Rescue, Hofbrauhaus, Dance Lesson, and the Limo Tour.

Now, for those who would like to see things happen which we have not
been doing, or have not been done recently, please suggest them, as many
of you have (below) or better yet, please consider volunteering to make
them happen. :)

We had a few comments on cost, specifically lunch cost:

+We need to pick less expensive places for lunch. My partner and
+I ate at Gold Coast Buffett on Monday and rated it second only to
+Bellagio and it cost less than $20 for both of us, half the Belliago

and

+Please keep the lunch down in price and central locations. I was going
+to go to Rio but I couldn't get a ride, could'nt find the shuttle, and
+was not going to pay 20 for a cab, 20 for lunch, and 20 for a cab back.
+That's a $60 dollar lunch.

+Overall this is the best TG event on the planet but please keep the
+lunch cost down.

Looking at this with perfect 20/20 hindsight, I must admit that we
missed the boat on this one! One of our guiding principles for this year
was affordability, and I must admit that we neglected it when selecting
the two buffets at the Rio and Harrah's. :(

Four of our lunch sessions were highly rated, so we did indeed "catch
the boat" on these.

+Lunch With Ginger, FSM Food Court, Thursday, March 31: 5.0
+Lunch With Ginger, Golden Nugget Buffet, Saturday: 5.0
+Lunch With Aejaie, Guy Fieri's, Monday, March 28: 4.75
+Lunch With Aejaie, Hash House a Go-Go, Wednesday 4.75

Personally, I was very pleasantly surprised by the Golden Nugget Buffet
which I had never been to in its current incarnation.

and a related question ...

+Why did you not use the Flamingo buffet this year?

I don't know. Again, with 20/20 hindsight it probably would have been a
better choice than Rio or Harrah's. I did do Flamingo Buffet by myself
one morning this DLV and IMAO it was much better than the Rio Buffet and
a bit cheaper. Obviously it's more conveniently located.

Take-away: More attention to detail on this next year!

A somewhat-related question as to why we did not do things ...

+Why was there no tour of Amy's store this year? Also why was
+there no English Tea this year?

Short answer here, only answer, actually, is that no volunteer stepped
forward to coordinate either of the above this year. No volunteer means
no activity.

A big kudo for Off The Strip:

+The Linq for the big dinner party was phenomenal food. The servers
+were good too.

Yes, I agree! 110%. Good food, good crowd, good service, highly rated.
. . . . .

The very specific activity suggestions are always appreciated and each
year we bring them up in ORG and some are indeed implemented, as long
as we get volunteers to do so.

+VOICE LESSONS! VOICE LESSONS! VOICE LESSONS! Only a few have got the
+voice down good. Most don't seem to even try. I know this would be
+demand and great attendance even if you had to charge for it.

This has become a recurring suggestion.

We did have some discussion about bringing in a voice coach and one of
our volunteers suggested a specific person and said she would probably
be willing to come in and do a public session followed by paid one on
one sessions. This kind of got dropped and quite honestly I don't
remember any specific reason. We'll be sure to circle back to this topic
in ORG this coming year.

+If karaoke is an activity in demand, maybe consider the bar &
+brewpub at Super 8-Ellis Island Casino on Koval & Flamingo. It
+has been voted Best of Vegas off & on for years

Actually, we almost did this one a few years back when karaoke (is that
a common or proper noun?) was cancelled at one venue and we needed a new
one fast. It was on our list but we settled on Bill's, I guess because
we phoned them first (B before E) and they said that they had karaoke
that evening. :)

All it takes for anything to happen is for someone to agree to
coordinate it, and in the case of something like a small group for
karaoke, all you need to do is schedule it and agree to be there. How
easy is that! :)

+Instead of ballroom dancing, try basic country line dancing 1 or 2
+step lessons.

I don't know if our resident instructor does country or not but we will
be sure to bring this one up in ORG.

Here's one of the more unique suggestions, I admit:

+We should have a workshop on how to take good TG pictures. If you
+look at Flickr or Facebook you can spot the t-girl with your eyes
+closed. If we don't have any pro photographers with us we could
+hire a pro to give us some hints and practice on this.

Yes, I know EXACTLY what you mean WRT photos posted on the web and those
appearing in decades-old TG publications! The vernacular expression from
times far more Un-PC was that photos such as those "Scream Tranny" (hey,
I "share the heritage" so I can use that word!).

Now I am not a professional photographer.

However, I might be willing to coordinate some kind of a session on
taking better photos, either in person at DLV or prior to DLV on line.

Where I would suggest starting if you want to take (or pose for) more
attractive photos is to look at the tens of thousands of photos we have
on line of individuals, both those that "scream" and those that do not
"scream" (we have countless examples of both) and think critically ("to
question is the answer") about what makes them good or bad, and start
from there.

We can continue this discussion if anyone wants.

Lotsa great specific activity and venue suggestions this year:

+Yes, RAO's at Ceasars. Toby Keith at Harrah's. Grotto Italian
+downtown.

+High roller, but that probably gets old for some people.
+Bowling

+Black jack tornamentt

+A good Seafood Restaurant.

+Sergios-italian-gardens-restaurant I

+Celin Dion show at the Cesare's Palace with a possible group
+discount.

+Lawry's Prime Rib
+Belagio Buffee

+Gold Coast Buffet, good food, low price and accessible from the
+strip

+Dining Out - Nove Italiano, Palms.

+Had great steak dinner at Binions steak house on 24th floor...
+classy

+Yes, Blueberry hill for breakfast. Don't know if I would want to
+go dressed though.

+Bootleg bistro by ooutlet mall good food and mood music

+Divas Show

Any/all of these can happen if we have volunteers to make them happen.
If you want to see any of those at DLV 2017, please answer the Call For
Volunteers and volunteer specifically to make your favorite activity a
reality.

One negative suggestion:

+Rio-Village Seafood Buffet. Over priced, very limited selection
+and very poor quality. Would not recommend this seafood buffet.

Ok, we won't do it then. :)

Let's shift gears here ...

A number of comments had to do with what I'm going to call missed
connections and almost missed connection. First, let's circle back to
the objective part of the survey and the one "derog" which crept into
the double digits this year:

+Did you have any difficulty finding the locations at which DLV 2016
+activities were held?

+Yes: 13
+No: 59

We did receive a number of comments along this line as well ...

+Was going to go to lunch w. Ginger at Rio, but didn't know where
+shuttle was to leave

+Good example was wayne Newton tour listed for 9pm- I arrived
+at Katies Coffee at 8.15 to be told group had already
+GONE! Hmmmm

+Got lost driving to the GLBT center ended up at the airport

+Could not find dance lesson gave up

+Planned to go to the Center for Social meeting. Cab driver took
+me to a strip mall on Maryland Blvd. Returned to Flamingo

+Two events involving lunches were missed because I was not informed
+of a change of host and venue and one, despite searching the Rio
+casino buffet events I could not find the party.

+Also almost missed the limo tour. Cab from the restaurant to Caesar
+was stuck in traffic and did not know where in Caesar to meet.

+re "difficulty finding the group": Explore the Linq: I ate dinner by
+myself at the bar in the Chayo Mexican Kitchen (when Nora's fizzled
+out) from 7:45 to 9:15, expecting others to begin arriving about 9:00,
+but I saw no one from DLV.

Please, everyone, if you should run into any cases similar to those
reported above, please let us know immediately. For many activities the
Coordinator's phone number appears on the final detailed schedule. If
not, phone one of the general contact people. Please don't walk off,
drive off, or blow it off. If you can't find the venue or can't find the
group, scream! We don't want you to wait until it is too late do do
something about it!

+I had trouble ALMOST missing events. Late to pin ball and then barely
+made it to change and then to Bahama. Almost late to the limo ride.

Yes, time crunches and almost missed connections seemed to be far more
common for far more people this year.

No-win tight scheduling is something we work hard to avoid, but it some
cases, as in something we have little or no control over starting at a
fixed time, there's not much we can do.

+Missed orientation for new members at Bahama Breeze. Digital clock
+in room was damaged and was set 1 hour late. Unable to reset clock.

In a case such as this, the hotel will always be willing to send someone
up to set a clock for you, or bring you a new clock if it is defective.
Please don't be shy to let your hotel know if something is wrong, even
something that may seem minor. They have people whose job it is to help
you.

+Yes, don't start day after Easter. Rush from the plane to the hotel,
+wait in line to check in, move bags up, hurry to get dressed. Barely
+made it that night.

and

+Yes, first please revert and slide the schedule back to Sunday-Friday.
+Saturday was much too expensive and crowded. Lots of younger obnoxious
+hipsta types carrying their beer and acting like they owned the town.

There were also a few other comments regarding the Easter crunch.

We hear you on this.

I do admit that the Monday-Saturday timeframe starting right after
Easter is not the best! We have started the day after Easter in the past
and I don't remember that many issues but we did have several reports of
late and almost-late arrivals this year.

Over the past few years it's been very obvious that a Sunday through
Friday timeframe works better than any of the others that we have tried.

DLV dates are always selected by the ORG members of voting status, and,
for better or for worse, Monday-after-Easter through Saturday won the
majority this year.

A somewhat related comment ...

+maybe extend events through the weekend as a resident of Las Vegas
+difficult to attend daytime activities during the work week

Unfortunately this may be very difficult to do. We've had a few years
when we ended on Sunday and those were, as with this year, faced with a
mass-exodus on Saturday.

+It was my first year and we underestimated our costs and had a tight
+schedule. Next year we will be up to speed. It was a great trip.

and

+Missed several events. Just too tired. You can only do this for 2-3
+days and you start to wear out.

These issues (unanticipated costs, time crunches, fatigue) are very
frequently reported by first year (and sometimes by returning)
attendees. There is a learning curve. Yes, there are quite a few minor
expenses which are not obvious as well as a tendency to underestimate
the real-world get-ready-and-get-there times.

It may seem like it will be quick to simply run up to the room to pick
up a forgotten item but in real-world Las Vegas such a trek can easily
take 15-20 minutes. Worse is having to make a return trip to a hotel for
"just a minute" when already en route to an activity. Such a trip back
can very easily take the better part of an hour! Travel times in Las
Vegas are often quite a bit longer than expected!

It's also very easy to try to bite off more than you can chew, so to
speak. Please plan some down time into your schedule.

We did have a few transportation-related comments:

+Organize car pool-match drivers and riders, share cab or uber to
+different events. Not worth it for me to drive out to Las Vegas Motor
+Speedway by my self. Also don't like to drive and navigate at night.
+Willing to share a cab but could not find anyone.

and

+Main issue for me, as an out of towner from Australia, was how
+transport to various events.. Id rather we meet somewhere as a
+group for transport purposes.

We will open this up for discussion again in ORG. We had a ride share
program some years ago, but it did not scale well and got us endless
complaints when our attendance started exceeding 100 or so.

+We also need to recommend transportation by Uber and Lyft it was
+incredibly inexpensive and fast, $15 + tip from Rio to airport for
+example!

These services sure have their fans! As I said in my last response,
I took ny first Uber ride during this year's DLV.

We will most definitely be discussing transportation and I'm very sure
that Uber/Lyft will come up in discussion.

Now, steering the topic somewhat to something that will be more
significant next year.

+I used valet parking extensively for the first time this year and
+that was the cost I included for local transportation. I found it
+very convenient and never had an issue with the attendants or the
+process.

There will most likely be a very major change in the parking situation
in Las Vegas, particularly on the main portion of the Strip. All of the
facilities owned by the MGM group (MGM, Mandalay, NYNY and many others)
will begin to charge for parking in the very near future and it appears
that hotel guests will be subject to this charge as well.

In addition, it appears that the charge will be higher for valet parking
than for self parking.

MGM's competitors have not yet announced plans for paid parking, but
it's a general feeling on the LV chat boards that they will be forced
into it simply due to the fact that unless they do, people will park at
their facilites and patronize others.

We will most likely have some significant discussions within ORG WRT the
whole transportation scene, since about 2/3 of our attendees report
using their private or rental vehicle as their primary DLV means of
transportation.

The rates that have been posted are not cheap! They will definitely add
to the "total cost of ownership" of a Las Vegas trip.

There were, unfortunately, some technical issues reported.

+I would have gone to a few other activities but I was locked out of
+the activity site and my scanner wouldn't work on the back of my
+nametag. I inquired by email, but got an unsatisfactory answer (a
+simple listing of the activities and where and when would have
+sufficed) so I did not go to anything further than the Bahama Breeze

and

+No cell fone, and my hotel wifi worked sporadically, both of which
+limited communication.

and

+1. Text and e-mail DLV activity reminder did not work.

+2. Text messages and photos sent from Flamingo Hotel room (Spa
+Tower) were lost.

and

+Activity reminder did not work for me. Both e-mail and phone text
+did not work.

and

+Also had problems texting from my phone. Messages and photos that
+were sent, were not received.

Again, if technical issues occur, please give us the chance to do
something about it while we can. Likewise, if an email answer does not
answer your question, please reply and say that you need further info.

Some of the issues reported above may be due to cell phone coverage, or
more like the lack of same, but if we could check out the situation, it
would be easy to tell if it's something we do or do not have any control
over.

Here is another suggestion that we will definitely bring up in ORG.

+How about this. A sign-in table at the Flamingo. No, not an office
+or suite or anything that costs money. Just have the sign-in lady
+sit at a table out in the Flamingo lobby for one hour a day down
+by the CluB Cappucino and the beer bar.

This definitely seems more do-able than the usual suggestion of having a
permanent office or hospitality suite. We'll be sure to bring this up as
we discuss the logistics for the 2017 event.

Somewhat related ...

+You really need better check-in. We never got to check in and
+thusly never got badges and didn't feel like full members of
+the group.

+At the Thursday banquet it said there was check-in but nobody
+knew anything about it.

Our check-in is another one of our evolving concepts. We've always been
somewhat limited since we do not have any kind of permanent encampment
at which we can set up a check-in desk.

Check-in is one topic that we'll definitely re-visit in ORG.

+Likewise, we would of liked to go on the limo ride and the car
+museum but nobody knew anything about them or even who to go
+to to find out more.

Hmmmm ... I guess I should re-print that "Ask me about Limo Tour
Tickets" badge, huh? :)

+schedule DLV 2017 After taxes are due, by then we need a vacation,
+not a convention.

Yes, the USA tax deadline has been brought up before as one of many
factors to be considered in planning our event.

If you want your suggestion to have a bit more weight, please bring it
up when we open up discussion on the dates for DLV 2017. Better yet,
(shameless plug) :) volunteer to coordinate an activity so you will have
an official vote! :)

I'm going to spin off the following subtopic (younger attendees, or more
specifically their lower number) into a separate thread. I did some
"homework" regarding this during our event and I would like to open up
this topic for discussion.

+What can we do to attract younger people? I found the event to be a
+little uptight, geared towards older people.

+Perhaps the nightly dinners could be set up for a certain interest
+or age group, as opposed to the preference for food type or
+location. That way you could connect with similar people with
+similar interests.

+I like to go to clubs and bars, but found most of the crowd to be
+late 50s and 60ish; and more interested in quiet dinners, than
+clubbing. The event was much more quiet than what I would have
+liked.

and ...

+I am worried that DLV is losing touch with attendees under 40 who
+are spending more time at Wildside instead.

This has been removed from the Big List and thanks for the report. I
did know that one of the partners in the business was in poor health
a few years ago so this is not totally unexpected.

A couple of comments WRT the Creative Wigs thing ...

+Move the wig show back to the bar. It was impossible to see what was
+going on when you had it at Bahama.

and

+Enjoyed Wig seminar at Bahama Breeze but the Make-up portion seemed
+uninformative and would have preferred an actual makeup professional
+rather than someone who puts on makeup because its a daily thing for
+her

One limitation we have on things like this is that we're at the mercy of
the facilities which allow us to use them in exchange for the bar (and
this year the food) business. If the Creative Wigs folks do another one
of these, I'm sure they will again try to get a good facility to do
their thing. In this year's case, they really did not know what they
were getting until they got there and had to play things by ear.

On the positive side, both the luncheon portion and seminar portion were
highly rated for enjoyment, so we know that the series did indeed work
quite well.

+Creative Wigs Luncheon, Thursday: 4.66 (24 responses)
+Wig and Makeup Seminar, Thursday: 4.60 (30 responses)

To score that highly with that many responses definitely indicates that
the series was very highly received.

The makeup portion was kind of a throw-in which may or may not be
repeated in subsequent years.

I heard a lot of very good comments about this firm and I do hope that
they will again return in future years. :)

I'm reading the following comment as an "improvement with room for
further improvement" over recent years where we've been gigged for the
lack of inclusiveness and the perception of cliquishness.

+Being new to Diva, I did feel that there were a lot of groups already
+formed and it is hard to meet new people. People were friendly to me
+but most went back to their group. Not complaining because I
+understand people are comfortable with people they already know.

+I met a lot of first timers and hung around them. Thanks for putting
+on Diva. I had a good time.

This "improvement" was also reflected in ...

+Girls were much more friendly-er this year.

and

+Crowd was far more friendly this year. Last year seemed like
+everyone was in a bad mood and complained about everything and
+everything. Less complaining and more happy and friendly this
+year.

We had a slight improvement this year on the "friendly and inclusive"
question on the objective portion of the survey. I did, personally,
notice a better overall mood of the crowd this year and fielded far
fewer outright complaints this year.

I think that the positive atmosphere of our second major gathering
really added to the overall up-ness of this year's event!

Hopefully this trend continues. :)

+I wanted to use my debit card to pay for my meal at an event and
+I was initially met with hostility.

I'm assuming this was at Off The Strip, and one of the few down sides of
their arrangement was that there was a limit on the number of forms of
payment they would accept. This turned out to be less of an issue than
we had initially expected, fortunately.

The question on the objective part of the survey regarding cash and
cards was so we could get a handle on the payment methods that our
people use and prefer.

The majority, as we found out, do have cash to use if they need it but
about 22% prefer to use plastic for almost everything.

Hopefully we'll be able to negotiate some better payment-friendly terms
at this facility if we use it next year.

One comment given to me was to the effect that, compared to last year,
people were having a much better time at our second major gathering so
the lack of separate checks was far less of an issue.

While our survey does concentrate on such things as critical evaluation
and areas for improvement and such, it also gives the opportunity for
positive feedback, which is indeed appreciated.

Comments such as those below are read, noted, and appreciated, every
single one of them! Thanks again to all for a great event this year! :)

+Thank you to the volunteers that make this a great event. I wish I
+could have stayed the whole week, but I feel like I was able to make the

I find it repulsive that people on here were taken back by someone in a mask. Most of us are men in woman's clothing, wigs and makeup and you feel the need to shun someone because they are not like you or what you think is proper? Everyday we go out looking like we do, we come into contact with people thinking the exact same thing. Thinking we should not be there and yet you do the same thing.

Good point on your "front story" about this issue. But, I am not sure
it reflects the "back story".

Back story says that a mask goes beyond the "cross-over point". A mask
affects the essence of the person who we are, and becomes a complete
disguise. Beyond wig and dress, a mask hides the face... our "who"....
the eyes into our soul.

When I see it, I know it. A mask is not a wig.... Or as one of our U.S.
Supreme Court Justices once said: "...pornography is difficult to
define, but.... when I see it, I know it...."
