Tentative dates for Diva Las Vegas 2015 ...

----------

The Diva Las Vegas Organizers Group (DLVORG) has just voted (with a very
significant majority) to hold DLV 2015 on the week beginning Sunday,
March 22, 2015.

Our customary one-month Call For Comments is now open, to end Saturday,
September 6. Assuming no significant objections are received, the date
will become final at that time. The week of our event is now noted as
"tentative" on our web site.

Please do not make any non-refundable arrangements until the dates are
announced as final!

Those who are very observant may have noticed the slight change in
wording of the date announcement this year, specifically the lack of an
end date on the timespan. This was very intentional, leaving open the
option of expanding to a 7-day event.

This will be decided upon by the DLVORG group within the next month and
is mostly dependent upon the capacity of the volunteer group. If you
would like to see an expanded event next year, please volunteer to help
out. (We don't need the same people doing more, we need more people
doing their share.) If you're interested in volunteering, just e-mail
dlvorg@geekbabe.com and say so. :)

Comments on the tentative timeframe and the possibility of expanding
to a 7-day event are welcome.

[dlvdisc] Tentative dates for Diva Las Vegas 2015 ...

I'm generally in favor of the seven days, under the "more is better"
perspective, but I normally try to come in a day or two early in any
case. I understand the hotel cost issue, but there is always the option
to move for a night from the strip to a non-casino hotel if the rates
are excessively high on the 28th - a bit inconvenient, but certainly
doable. For me, as I am coming in from the East Coast, the arrival and
departure dates are driven more by the air cost/availability than the
hotel rates.

my thoughts are you would keep it the same time fame . from tuesday to sunday . with 2 orientations one tuesday and one thursday for people who arrive later in the week. seems you are kinda lost if you miss that first orientation.
my 2nd thought is to concentrate around 1 or 2 hotels with more events around those 2 sites making it easier on volunteers. i know this is not a convention but it seems people and events get scattered all over thus making each event less crowded and we all want to be more together . as far as the events enough with the rock climbing and golf. we are there to do lady things . more dances and shopping outtings, maybe a thrift store crawl .
all the volunteers do a fantastic job but sometimes less is more . anyone agree???

As a point of clarification, the span of days we've had from 2010 forward has been from Sunday through Friday.

Unless the wind shifts direction over the next couple of weeks, this will most likely be what we do for DLV 2015. The consensus seems to be "ain't broke, don't fix it" among the volunteers.

I think that adding the Saturday pre-DLV event to the schedule would improve the turn out for that.Could just add dancing at Paris.

At this point all ideas seem to be out there for discussion about the ending date with a final decision to be made democratically after the discussion period. Seems to me the key points in an ending date for DLV 2015 are the quality of proposed activities and number of volunteer hosts. If we have a longer event we have to have more quality activities of interest and more hosts to put them on. Based on the number of event coordinators who stepped forward and the quality of proposed events in the past, the six day format has been more viable. An option open to anyone who wants more Las Vegas time is to simply come early or stay afterward and do things on his or her which I used to do. The last couple of years however, my SO has been insistent on a shorter stay and that would probably be true regardless of the 2015 official starting and ending dates.

I guess you either don't read or don't understand my position on the subject, because you keep going over the same points. The fact of the matter is; DLV has always had PRE activities and POST activities, that were not a part of the ACTUAL dates. Leave it as a 6 day event, like it has been. It is not broken, so why fix it. Nobody HAS to stay any longer than they want to.

You're arguing about nothing. You're arguing about things we already do, whether it's officially a part of DLV or not. WTF is the difference. Nothing is going to change either way. WE will still have things to do on the Sat. before & the Sat. and Sun. after, whether it's official or not.

The quality of the activities is a very good point. If we have something on our schedule, we owe it to the attendees to be sure that it meets the standards we've set for our activities. At minimum, this means that there will be a DLV Coordinator present at the posted start time to represent the program and to welcome the others.

There is a point of exhaustion of the active volunteers. However, the time at which the exhaustion occurs has been moving later and later (closer to the event) over the past few years. This past year it did not occur until very shortly before the event. I sincerely think that if we have the same level of participation among those who hosted activities last year, plus the added "bandwidth" of the new volunteers, we could, if we wanted to, do a quality seven-day event.

However, I am questioning whether or not a scheduled seven-day event would result in a greater degree of participation or an increased sense of enjoyment and satisfaction than a six-day event.

Yes, there are some realistic limits on many attendees' length of participation. Time off is one consideration. Cost of weekend hotel rates for two successive weekends is another factor. Still another is that some are tied (golden handcuffs) to certain airline schedules.

I'm with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" crowd on this one.
Besides, by the time day 6 rolls around not only is my budget broken,
but I'm wondering if my face can survive one more scrape, sand, buff and
paint. Keeping the "official" length at 6 days allows for planning the
opening, closing and other anchor events. This allows attendees to plan
well in advance to get their time off and best rates for the DLV
experience they are able to enjoy. Since Las Vegas is open, regardless
of our schedule, there are plenty of pre and post event gatherings.
