[ In response to some off-line conversation, I re-ran the DLV 2007
survey tabulation, counting only those who indicated less than
50 miles of travel, which implies local to the Las Vegas area. ]

I really don't see anything earthshaking in these numbers, but there
are a few interesting factoids.

This came about due to an off-line conversation about locals, and the
fact that there is a financial advantage (I placed this roughly in
the one-kilobuck range, it appears to be higher in the numbers shown
below) to locals, who typically will not have the transportation and
lodging expenses.

Statistically, locals have always made up about 20-25% or so of our
attendees.

The bias toward multi-year returnees is stronger on the locals
side than on the out-of-towners side.

One off-survey remark I will make is that those who register as
newcomers who are local have a very poor turnout rate. Only about
40% of local newcomers ever make it to any DLV activity. This has
been very consistent over the past few years.

This sharply contrasts (62%) with the general survey results,
where only 32 of 84 (38%) indicated current membership.

We've always had ties to the local TUG group, and I'm sure these
numbers are a reflection of this fact.

This rated somewhat higher on the enjoyment scale for the locals
than for the general populace (4.45).

This was much lower than reported by the general audience (4.62) on
the comfort scale. Any ideas? Are locals maybe less at ease due to

Half of the locals apparently did not catch wind of this, compared to
about 1/3 of the respondents in general. Maybe locals don't read the
Yahoo groups that much. :)

These are the items which show the most difference between locals and
out of towners. I'm putting the general survey numbers in parentheses
here.

This is average, reflecting the fact that a couple locals did indeed
stay in a hotel. I'm sure the median on this one would be zero.

This appears to reflect the advantage of being able to do some meals
at home. Out of towners, of course, reported costs for all meals, while
that reported by locals will be for the meals that appear on our
schedule that they attended only.

My guess is that there are several factors at play here.

Less than one third! Obviously the locals know better, :)

average spent less than 1/4 of the $$$ toward DLV than did the
