Pinkfest 2015 survey report, part 1 ...

Postby External Poster » Mon Nov 16, 2015 3:49 pm

This posting is from: Pinkfest
----------

This is the first of two reports, giving the results of the objective
portion of the survey. 11 mostly-complete responses were received.

The survey was made by doing a very quick-and-dirty rewrite of the
template used for the Diva Las Vegas survey. Some terminology may seem
odd in the context of Pinkfest in Chicago. If the survey is repeated, it
will be done with a new more event-appropriate template.

Thanks to all who participated in the survey! :)

Comments are welcome.

Re: Pinkfest 2015 survey report, part 1 ...

Postby annie » Wed Nov 18, 2015 10:14 am

Some comments on the Pinkfest survey.

In several of these comments, I'm going to make references to Diva Las Vegas and the similar surveys that we've used for over 10 years at the end of each annual event.

I'm not commenting on all items, just those I think are quite significant.

I'm putting this section (activity enjoyment scores) up front because I think it's one of the most important sections of the survey.

We've used this 5-point scale to rate activities for DLV for over 10 years and it's worked out quite nicely. For this year's Pinkfest we tracked 23 individual activities.

> What was your level of enjoyment at each of the following activities?

> Wine Tasting, Taste Food and Wine, Thursday: 5.0 (8 responses)
> Blood Brothers, Theo Ubique Theater, Thursday: 5.0 (4 responses)
> Adler Planetarium, Adler Planetarium, Friday: 5.0 (6 responses)
> Lunch With Ginger, Ann Sathers, Saturday: 5.0 (5 responses)
> Chicago Architecture Boat Tour, Saturday: 5.0 (4 responses)
> Lunch With Ginger, Billy Goat Tavern, Sunday: 5.0 (5 responses)

Six of the activities, or 26%, scored a perfect 5.0 on the enjoyment scale. This is exceptional! It says a lot about the selection of our activities. I consider the 5.0 to be the A+ on the grading scale, as any singular response less than "enjoyed significantly" will push an activity out of the 5.0 category.

> Pre-Pinkfest Gathering, Downtown Bar, Tuesday: 4.66 (3 responses)
> Lunch Without Ginger, Hemmingway Bistro, Wednesday: 4.75 (4 responses)
> Kelly Inc Open House, Kelly Inc., Wednesday: 4.66 (6 responses)
> Dinner, Winberies, Wednesday: 4.83 (6 responses) (1 no-shows)
> Quality Social Time, Bar Louie Oak Park, Wednesday: 4.50 (6 responses)
> Lunch With Ginger, Towbar, Thursday: 4.60 (5 responses)
> Lunch With Ginger, Walnut Room, Friday: 4.85 (7 responses)
> Happy Hour, Twin Anchors, Sunday: 4.50 (8 responses)
> Dinner, Twin Anchors, Sunday: 4.77 (9 responses)

Bubbling right under the perfect 5.0 activities are those which scored between 4.5 and 4.999 on the enjoyment scale. I consider this to be a solid A on the grading scale, as to score in this range, an activity has to garner more "enjoyed significantly" responses than all others combined.

Nine (9 count 'em 9) or 39% of our activities scored in this range, making 65% of our activities score 4.5 or better on the enjoyment scale! This is, again, exceptional!

> Hemmingway Birthplace tour, Wednesday: 4.33 (3 responses)
> Happy Hour, Winberies, Wednesday: 4.40 (5 responses)
> Leather Museum, Leather Museum, Thursday: 4.20 (5 responses)
> Dining and Imbibing, Big Chicks, Thursday: 4.25 (4 responses)
> Happy Hour, Mercat, Friday: 4.16 (6 responses)
> Quality Social Time, Signature Lounge, Friday: 4.33 (6 responses)
> Happy Hour, Trader Todds, Saturday: 4.14 (7 responses)

We had 7 out of 23 (30%) score between 4.0 and 4.999 on the enjoyment scale. To score in this range an activity has to have more "enjoyed significantly" and "enjoyed" ratings than all lesser ratings. I consider this to be the B on the grading scale, and quite commendable.

> Dinner, Mercat, Friday: 3.57 (7 responses)
> Dinner, Giordano's, Saturday: 3.75 (8 responses)
> Boystown Bars, Various, Saturday: 3.0 (2 responses)

Only three of our activities scored less than 4.0 on the enjoyment scale, and NOTHING scored to the left of neutral. Activities that place in this range are in no way failures, since more people enjoyed them than disliked them. They simply didn't place as high as the others.

> What was your comfort level at each of the following activities?

NOTHING scored less than 4.5 on the comfort scale! This indicates that wise choices were made in selecting our venues this year! :)

> 11 mostly-complete responses were received.

The only disappointment is that I was hoping for a much higher response rate. Using Laura's total of 29 individuals who participated in this year's Pinkfest, only 38% answered the survey. For DLV we usually see a response rate of 60% or so, and this number is similar to the numbers from another TG event with which I was formerly associated.

As a comparison, a one-shot ad-hoc survey (dining and lodging preferences) sent to the DLV audience, and launched about the time we launched this survey, garnered 70-some responses.

There's still enough for some meaningful take-aways, just keeping in mind the variance and the "noise" that may be present in the numbers. :)

> How many times have you attended Pinkfest?

> Once: 4
> Twice: 1
> Three or more: 2
> Five or more: 0
> Ten or more: 4

We had a very good mix of first-timers and multi-year attendees.

> About how far did you travel to attend Pinkfest 2015?

> What primary means of transportation did you use to travel to
> Pinkfest 2015?

Sorry that "rail" got left off. We'll get that added to both the Pinkfest and the DLV surveys next year. :)

> Average length of stay: 5.42 days.

Believe it or not, this number is VERY close to the average length of stay that we've seen on the DLV surveys over the years.

> Approximate average age: 59.9

No surprise here. This is very typical of TG events and is right where it was expected to be.

> Approximate length of experience with regard to appearing in public.

> 2 - 5 years: 1
> 5 - 10 years: 3
> 10 - 20 years: 2
> More than 20 years.: 4
> This question does not apply to me.: 1

This, and the subsequent related question, indicate that we did not see much of a newly-out contingent.

> I consider myself to be primarily a (an) ...

> Crossdresser: 3
> Transvestite: 1
> Transgender(ist): 1
> Transwoman: 4
> Friend of the community: 1
> I do not identify with any of the above labels: 1

One interesting note is that we got a higher number of "Transwoman" (a relatively newer label) responses than I would have expected, 4 out of 11 or about 36%. This year's DLV survey had 7 (out of 77) "Transwoman" response or about 9%.

Some may question the inclusion of "Transvestite" as a choice, a term which is considered to be anachronistic and deprecated. The reason it was included, and the reason it's still included on the DLV survey (and a similar recent survey I did for another group) is that we still get a small but meaningful number of individuals who pick that label as their self-identity. We had 1 out of 11 or about 9%, while this year's DLV survey had 5 out of 77 or about 6%.

> Pre-op: 0
> Post-op: 0
> No-op: 0

Somewhat of a surprise was not a single response in the "transition track" categories, those formerly known by the fast-falling-out-of-favor term "Transsexual".

No responses to the more contemporary labels, which is no surprise, since those are usually used by those far younger than the majority of our people.

> Nonsmoker: 10
> Occasional smoker: 0
> Regular smoker: 1

Close to the same percentage as DLV, and MUCH lower than was the case in the TG community just a few decades ago!

> I consider myself to be a (an) ...

> Non-drinker: 1
> Social drinker: 9
> Regular drinker: 1

No surprise here. :)

> Do you belong to a local transgender support group?

> I am currently a member.: 3
> I have previously been a member.: 6
> I have never been a member.: 2

We've been seeing the responses on the DLV survey swinging from current-member to previous-member for quite a few years now and the numbers above reflect what we typically see with the DLV survey.

> Have you ever attended any of the following transgender community
> events? (Weighted relative responses for each event.)

> Diva Las Vegas 11
> Be-All 9
> Southern Comfort Conference 6
> Holiday Enfemme 3
> Fall Harvest 4
> Fantasia Fair 2

No real surprises here. DLV and Be-All scored highest for obvious reasons. :)

> Did you find yourself missing Pinkfest activities because you either got
> into a time crunch or were simply too tired from previous activites?

> Seldom or never: 5
> Occasionally: 6
> Frequently: 0

This is somewhat higher, in percentage, than we see on the DLV surveys. Our activities in Chicago usually had more travel time than do the typical DLV activities.

> Did you find yourself missing Pinkfest activities because you were in
> any uncomfortable, unsure, or uneasy about attending?

> Never: 9
> Once: 0
> Occasionally: 1
> Frequently: 0

This is very good! I'm hoping that the individual who answered "occasionally" feels better about it now and will feel better about it come Pinkfest 2016.

> During the course of the event, did you suffer from an unexpected
> illness or injury which prevented you from fully participating?

> Yes I did: 1
> No I did not: 10

I think I know who answered this affirmatively. :(

We started asking this question on the DLV survey after many reports of cold/flu symptoms and reported GI virus issues.

> Did you have convenient and reliable e-mail service during Pinkfest,
> using any method?
>
> Yes, and I checked e-mail frequently.: 8
> Yes, but I checked it infrequently.: 3
> No: 0

Everyone at Pinkfest was well-connected. Somewhat higher than we see at DLV.

> Did you find the online maps to be helpful?

> Yes: 7
> No: 0
> I don't need a map: 3
> What maps?: 1

Only one who did not know of the maps. Typically we see quite a few at DLV who don't know that maps are available.

> Did you find the other Pinkfest attendees to be friendly and inclusive?

> Mostly yes: 10
> Yes, somewhat: 0
> Neutral: 0
> No, somewhat: 0
> Mostly no: 0

This says a LOT about our people!

> In general, were you comfortable being seen with the Pinkfest group in
> general public settings?

> Comfortable most or all of the time.: 10
> Mostly comfortable, but sometimes uncomfortable.: 1
> Frequently uncomfortable.: 0

Again, says a lot about those who attend Pinkfest! :)

For the questions about money, the numbers were lower than I would have expected. The reason for this, most likely, is that we have a higher percentage of local-area people at Pinkfest than we do at DLV and the locals "diluted" such things as travel and lodging expenses.

> In general, did you consider pinkfest 2015 to be reasonable and affordable?

> Yes, definitely: 7
> Yes, somewhat: 3
> Neutral: 1
> No, somewhat: 0
> No, definitely: 0

This is always an interesting question, but it's somewhat self-defeating, since those who can't afford such an event tend not to attend.

> Which best indicates what pinkfest is to you?

> An opportunity to dress.: 2
> An opportunity to socialize.: 9
> An opportunity to party.: 0
> An opportunity to express myself.: 0
> An opportunity to learn.: 0

No surprise here.

> Would you attend another pinkfest?

> Yes, definitely: 8
> Yes, probably: 1
> Maybe: 1
> Probably not: 1
> Definitely not: 0

I would really like to hear from the "probably not" respondee. I have to assume there was some disappointment, and I would like to find out what that is and see if we can do anything to mitigate it or prevent things like it in the future. If you don't care to post in public, please write me privately (annie at annie dot net) and I'll keep your identity confidential.

Thanks to all who participated in this year's highly-successful Pinkfest and to those who participated in our follow-up survey! :)
