I've stayed at the Imperial Palace which has the advantage of being
centrally located on the Strip but the disadvantage of being fairly
shabby and rundown. The rooms are on the level of a Ramada / Super 8
motel. If you don't have a vehicle, it's in close proximity to a lot of
the major hotels and casinos.
I've also stayed at the Sahara, which is in slightly better shape than
the IP (think Hampton Inn / Best Western level), but is near the
northern end of the strip. If you have a vehicle, the garage is easily
accessible and you'll be able to drive around the strip quite easily.
You also can go right out a side door to the garage without having to
go through the casino if you are skittish about going through the
casino while dressed.
Neither is any great shakes as far as accommodations go (keep in mind
that in my job I spend about 100 nights a years in hotels) but since
you're likely only to be sleeping, showering and changing in your room
either one will do. The deciding factors will likely be price and what
access you want to non-DLV activities around town.
I'm renting a car and will be staying at the Sahara.
