Ok, here are a few that I liked in particular the past few years.
1. Ed Debevic's. IMAO, this is a must-do. Everybody seems to like it,
and they seem to love us there. :)
2. Rudy's show at Gentry downtown, if he is performing at the time. If
you've never seen this, it is hilarious and very entertaining. Yes, yes,
yes, this is the type of entertainment that fits fine in the lounge of a
gay bar, but Rudy attracts a very mixed audience. :) I'll be willing to
check his schedule to see if he's gonna be performing there or somewhere
else in the area. Last 2 years he was there on the Miller Lite Comedy
Tour.
3. Dinner at Ann Sathers on Belmont. I've always enjoyed the food and
the service. This is a very good prelude to anything in the Boystown
(Lakeview) area. Down side is that for the time being they do not have a
liquor license, so it's bring it if you want it. They do provide mixers.
4. Hunters Dance Club. I admit I was pleasantly surprised with this one.
I had expected a loud techno-industrial scene with hundreds of horny
guys hitting on each other and anybody who walked in. It turned out to
be very nice. Yes, the club is centered around a dance floor, but there
are quiet areas and the people are friendly. Down side is that it's
waaaaay out in the toolies. If you don't have your own vehicle, it's a
long train/taxi ride. The only thing I didn't enjoy that evening was
the trip back, but that was my own fault for drinking so much! :) :(
5. Hard Rock Cafe. I wouldn't call this a must-do, but it was nice for
happy hour and din-din. Yeah, there are HRC's everywhere.
6. Boystown bars. I would like to explore more bars and such up in that
area. I really enjoyed the Gentry up there, and that one we landed at
last year (Sidetrack?). I admit I wasn't too fond of Berlin. It's
apparently geared toward twentyboppers, and I haven't been one of those
for more years than I will admit to. :) :( We've only scratched the
surface of that area. I've passed by TONS of others in the area that
look worth checking out.
7. Baton Show Lounge. Yeah, yeah, stereotypical GLBT scene. I remember I
really enjoyed the show there in 2001, but in 2002 it seemed to be very
much of a rewind-replay except for the last number and didn't have the
"punch" it did in 2001. One of our people apparently had some restroom
issues there in 2002. In 2003, Horshack was not waving his hand in the
are screaming "oooh, ohhh, Mr Kotter" when we discussed this, so we
skipped it last year.
The only activities that don't seem to work are the daytime ones. Last
year there was some conversation about going looking at dead bones and
such on Saturday, but nobody was really jumping up and down about it.
People seemed to just go off and do their own thing during the day,
which was actually fine with me, since I went off and spent some time on
another of my projects. I don't get to Chicago that much anymore, and I
do admit I enjoy spending some time by myself just taking it all in.
Oh well, you asked. :)
