Quick information security item:

A few of the people here on the ORG list, all with Yahoo accounts,
appear to have suffered a security incident which is causing spam to be
sent in their names to their contact lists.

This appears to be a result of the users being tricked into clicking on
something that they should not have clicked.

If you use Yahoo (or even if you do not) please be sure to be very
careful when clicking on any URL received via email, even if it appears
to be from a trusted friend.

Please be careful out there on the net! :)

Evaluating the candidate weeks:

Over the next few weeks we will be discussing the timespan of our big
2017 event. It is important that you let your thoughts and feelings be
known earlier rather than later in the process, so those of voting
status have the information they need to make their decision.

One very important note on this topic is:

IF ANYONE IS TOTALLY "LOCKED OUT" OF ANY WEEK
WHICH IS UNDER CONSIDERATION, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT
THAT YOU BRING THIS UP NOW!

This year we will be emphasizing any active volunteer conflicts. In
all fairness, we do ask you to please not exaggerate your degree of
difficulty or conflict regarding any particular week that is under
consideration.

Following our vote, we'll announce the proposed dates and allow a
one-month "call for comments" before the dates are considered final.

The table below shows a "scoring" based on the comments which have come
in regarding the conflict-free weeks. The scoring is as follows:

Two points for a specific positive or favorable mention of the week
itself. One point for a positive or favorable mention of a span which
includes the week. Minus two points for a specific negative or
unfavorable mention of the week itself. Minus one point for a negative
or unfavorable mention of a span which includes that week.

Week of Sun, Mar 19: No significant conflicts +5
Week of Sun, Mar 26: No significant conflicts +3
Week of Sun, Apr 02: No significant conflicts 0
Week of Sun, Apr 30: No significant conflicts +3
Week of Sun, May 21: No significant conflicts +3

Two (actually three) weeks not on the no-conflict list were also
mentioned.

+Week of Sun, Apr 16: Easter Apr. 16

> I like the April 16 start, since it's after taxes.

Let's talk about this one.

First of all, this was counted as a favorable mention for all weeks
after tax time in the US.

Easter is April 16 and Passover runs until sundown on Tuesday the 18th.

Our Monday-Saturday timeframe in 2016, following Easter Sunday, proved
to be problematic in two respects. First, a small but very meaningful
number of our attendees could not make, or barely made our opening
gathering at BB due to family commitments on Easter and tight travel
times. Second, we had an exceptionally weak final day (Saturday) due to
many of our people, including several of the more active volunteers,
leaving that day.

This year we have an active volunteer conflict reported for the first
part of that week as well.

We have five good potential weeks to consider with no major family or
religious conflicts, so unless there are any objections, let's consider
the potential timespan beginning Monday, April 17, to be "in reserve" in
the event that none of the conflict-free weeks prove to be workable.

The two weeks covering Passover were noted as a conflict for one active
volunteer. Neither of those weeks are on the "no conflict" list.

The floor remains open for date discussion and the clock is ticking. :)

Even-year Admin. Committee vote:

This is one business item we do need to take care of.

Gina's two year term on the Admin Committee will expire at the end of
this month and we need to fill the seat for the next two years.

Gina is eligible for re-election if she so desires.

Anyone else of voting status is also eligible to serve in this position.

The floor is now open for nominations for this position. All volunteers,
regardless of voting status may nominate and second the nominations, as
well as participate in related discussions. Self-nominations are
appropriate and even encouraged.

Nominations, anyone? :)

Bahama Breeze, K(K)KK and such:

Hi.

Anyone who would like to hostess the Bahama Breeeze opening night please
feel free to go ahead. so I Do Respectfully decline the task.

I got enormous pleasure out of doing this with Bev over the last few
years as a Co-Hostess simply because it feels good to be actively
involved in something a nice as DLV and Bev did all the work anyway.
*lol* This year I Assisted Vera with the orientation and gratifyingly
for us there was a decent sized audience to talk to which was nice I
thought.

Some might say that it is a relatively easy task to do the opener and
that it will probably take off on it's own as soon as it gets underway
and it probably is but I think 2 or three people need to be involved for
it to be to be a major success rather than a ... "Oh well That was nice"
event..

I will likely do **Katies Kosey Koffee Korner** Note the 4 K's now
instead of three.. Ha! .. which is much more politically correct and
respectful of peoples feelings than the 3 letters..... again next Spring
but I will probably leave my participation at that level.

If Dionne or Cami would like me to assist them then I can do that but
please don't feel obligated to include me in the planning.. I know that
people like to have their own crew and/or friends in place for things
like this which is why it went so smoothly with Bev and I.. I totally
understand that things go much smoother when everyone is happy,
contented and comfortable with those around them rather than a stranger.

I enjoy DLV and will likely be back again next year. But along the lines
of possible dates for 2017, I wanted to mention that the price of
accommodations never bothered me much! It was more the price of flights
at specific times of the year which was the killer for me! .... (I am
retired and sadly not as Affluent as I once was).

This past Spring the flight was almost $30% more than we payed in
September and when my wife and I did a 4 day mini Vacation in June of
this year the direct flight from Detroit was 50% $$ what I payed in
March. Not that I am suggesting June, I am Not! although September would
suit me far better than March or April!

It is what it is though and Spring is traditionally DLV time and I can
live with that.

One thing that we might be mindful of is that Mondays are Always cheaper
to fly in to Vegas than Sundays are. This is not really a problem for me
as I can arrive Mid day Monday and be ready to leap into action for the
opener by 5 PM but obviously in this instance I cannot hostess Monday
Mornings KKKK from 35,000 feet up so the new and improved KKKK would
have to be only a 4 day event than a 5 and I think Monday is the
important one, especially for those new to the Annual Do..

Hopefully this helps the selection of dates along.

Annie responds:

Thanks for the clarification, Katie. :)

Dionne, it looks like Bahama Breeze is your baby if you want it. Please
confirm during this next list cycle. Cami has "second dibs" on it.

We'll consider K(K)KK to be a "go" for all days that you will be in
attendance.

Now, Katie, you may be in luck if you will be flying out of Detroit, as
most of the airlines have their schedules and fares published for all of
the potential DLV dates. Doing a quick check with Travelocity/Expedia,
we get the following for the weeks under consideration.

This is for DTW-LAS, Depart Sunday/Monday, return Saturday, with the
lowest specific real and bookable fares (US dollars) listed:

Week of Sun, Mar 19: No significant conflicts ($379/$379)
Week of Sun, Mar 26: No significant conflicts ($379/$379)
Week of Sun, Apr 02: No significant conflicts ($434/$434)
Week of Sun, Apr 30: No significant conflicts ($297/$297)
Week of Sun, May 21: No significant conflicts ($367/$377)

This far out at least, there's no increase for Sunday over Monday, and
in one case Sunday is cheaper.

Southwest, however, does show slightly higher fares for a Sunday
departure than for a Monday. Their schedule is not published for the
potential DLV dates yet, but looking at an example non-holiday week in
early March they show $352 (USD) round trip for a Monday departure with
a Saturday return and $382 (USD) round trip for a Sunday departure and
Saturday return.

Hope this helps.

Lodging and such:

Aleta writes:

I think AirBnB needs to be looked at.

Personally I have not used it (yet), someday perhaps I hope. It's a good
concept and I favor it. I don't know how well it's doing in Las Vegas,
some of the jurisdictions in Southern Nevada prohibit rentals less than
31 days. I would hope to see more conversation about it, I certainly
think it's a viable option and it is definitely workable for some.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Thanks, Aleta.

Looking ahead on the AirBnB web site, and using the week of April 2 as
an example, prices run from $37 daily for a "Modest Las Vegas private
room", which appears to be in the UNLV area, to well over $100 daily for
some MGM suites. Several offerings in the $30-ish to $50-ish range are
indeed listed, none of which appear to be walkable to the main Strip
area.

There are several listed in the $60-ish and above range, but at that
price point they are approaching the price of Strip hotels.

Ginger and others have been having very good luck with AirBnB for
Pinkfest, even bringing her "landlords" with her to one of our
gatherings a couple of years back. The larger AirBNB offerings appear to
be excellent for sharing, but it will take some volunteers to do some
legwork and coordination for something like this to be practical for any
significant number of DLVers.

It may indeed be an option for those who have their own transportation.

Topgolf:

Aleta writes:

> Topgolf might be a good broader-interest activity, ...

I did visit Topgolf shortly after they opened. I am not a golfer so it
was basically an informational visit. I was very much impressed. I found
the staff very knowledgeable and welcoming.

There is food and drinks on site. Topgolf bills based on time so it is
important that the group commit to paying for that time, it's necessary
to keep track of that as the meter runs if you will.

It's not very convenient to walk to but there is lots of uber, lyft,
taxis coming through, and they have a large parking lot but I think it's
valet controlled.

The hitting bays at Topgolf are shaded so sun exposure is not a problem
I think they have misters overhead I found it quite comfortable. It's
definitely worth looking into I think.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Aleta.

Topgolf looks very promising for DLV 2017 and it looks like we have an
interested volunteer as well, so hopefully it will be well attended and
well liked. :)
