This mailing:
Again, another fairly long mailing simply due to the fact that so much
is happening.
We are moving right along and the schedule is actually taking shape
quite nicely. Again, thanks to all who have volunteered to make DLV 2015
the success that it will be! :)
One thing to please remember is that at this time, everything on the
schedule is "in pencil" and all times can be considered to be tentative
at this time.
. . . . .
A couple of policy and administrivial items here ...
(wonk hat on)
There are a couple of activities for which the "rightful" Coordinator,
the one who has existing first-refusal rights, may not be clear. For the
record, here's chapter and verse from our Standing Rules:
+ (5) The Coordinators of a successful DLV activity in the
+ most recent year have "first refusal rights" to coordinate
+ the same or a similar activity in the current year, subject
+ to the approval of the ORG Group and Project Manager.
We want to give everyone who wants to help out with an activity the
opportunity to do so. However, if it's a question of who is "in charge"
of a particular activity, this has been established by precedent and
stated in our standing rules. We may have a few cases where more of our
people want to help out with something than we can use. In that case
we'll try to find a related activity or function which needs some help.
Another think to keep in mind is that if you want to take on any of the
suggested activities is that you don't need to ask "May I?" in order to
contact vendors and make preliminary arrangements and such.
Self-starting is a value we appreciate very much.
(wonk hat off)
. . . . .
Thanks to those who helped to shake down and test out the registration
system. Only some very minor issues were reported. For the most part the
systems items are under control and will be "frozen" except for
necessary bug fixes until the event is over.
Please continue to watch for systems issues, as it's been shown that we
can't depend on reports to be made should there be problems. Please
report anything that does not work as expected, like an error message, a
wonky looking display, an e-mail that does not arrive as expected, etc.

Hotel strategy decisions:
There are a few Big Burning Questions at the end of this item. Please
comment! :)
We are now at a point where we can use the results of the hotel survey
to help formulate our hotel strategy for DLV 2015.
Our target date for announcing the suggested hotels is coming up and
we should do this during the first week in December at the latest.
First, let's re-examine the top five hotel responses obtained from our
recent survey. These are:
+if the hotel offers competitive room rates.: 52
+if the hotel is listed as a DLV Suggested Hotel: 44
+if the hotel has a reputation of being LGBT-friendly.: 42
+if the hotel has regular or occasional DLV gatherings on site.: 37
+if the hotel offers complimentary Internet access.: 35
Two of these line items, in particular the first, represent thrift, or
bang for buck.
Two of the line items represent camaraderie and companionship. Knowing
that others will be around.
One of the line items represents comfort, knowing that LGBT people, in
general will be welcome.
If we break all of the responses down by the values they represent, we
get some very clear patterns and the relative importance of the various
values of thrift, companionship, comfort, convenience, and location.
. . . . .
The following items represent the value of thrift:
+if the hotel offers competitive room rates.: 52
+if the hotel offers complimentary Internet access.: 35
+if the hotel has a special negotiated room rate for DLV attendees.: 34
+if the hotel does NOT impose Resort Fees: 31
Average for thrift: 38
. . . . .
The following items represent the value of companionship:
+if the hotel is listed as a DLV Suggested Hotel: 44
+if the hotel has regular or occasional DLV gatherings on site.: 37
+is listed as an exclusive or Most-preferred DLV Suggested Hotel: 33
+if I can be assured that other DLV attendees will be staying there.: 21
+a DLV Information Center or hospitality suite is located in the hotel.: 18
+a section or floor blocked off and reserved exclusively for DLV.: 15
+if the hotel has a designated DLV representative staying on site..: 12
Average for companionship: 26
. . . . .
The following represent the value of comfort:
+if the hotel has a reputation of being LGBT-friendly.: 42
+is known for catering to adults as opposed to families with children..: 29
+caters to mature individuals (40+) as opposed to twentysomethings.: 24
+a section or floor blocked off and reserved exclusively for DLV.: 15
+if the hotel is low-rise without a crowded lobby or common area.: 12
+if the hotel has a designated DLV representative staying on site..: 12
Average for comfort: 22
. . . . .
The following represent the value of convenience:
+if the hotel has convenient parking close to or near my hotel room.: 24
+if the hotel has buffet.: 19
+if the hotel is adjacent to or near a large shopping complex.: 12
+if the hotel has a Las Vegas Monorail station.: 10
Average for convenience: 16
. . . . .
The following represent the value of location. Not location, as to
deciding whether Strip, Off-Strip or Downtown is preferred, but how
important location is to selecting a hotel.
+if the hotel is located on the main part of the Las Vegas Strip.: 31
+if the hotel is located in downtown Las Vegas.: 12
+if the hotel is located AWAY FROM the main gaming and tourist areas.: 7
Average for location: 16
. . . . .
The following items are oddballs, which really do not fit cleanly into
any category.
+if the hotel is upscale or high-end.: 5
+if the hotel does NOT have a casino.: 3
+if the hotel is NOT listed as a DLV Suggested Hotel: 2
All of these have very low hit counts comparted to most of the other
items, so we can pretty much throw these out.
. . . . .
Thrift was the most, uh, "valued value" stated by the respondents
of the survey, followed by companionship and comfort.
Thrift: 38
Companionship: 26
Comfort: 22
Convenience: 16
Location: 16
Convenience and location are important to some, but further down on the
scale of priorities.
. . . . .
Conclusions:
It is very obvious that we should suggest one particular hotel which
covers the values of thrift, companionship, and comfort.
Whether or not we suggest other hotels is a matter for discussion.
For the time being, let's hold off on mentioning any specific properties
until we answer some general strategic questions.
Big Burning Questions:
1. Do we want to break with tradition and suggest one and only one
hotel, covering, as best as is possible, the values of thrift,
companionship, and comfort?
2. Do we want to move forward with the plan to suggest a downtown hotel?
This would be supported by the value of thrift, but would potentially
split up the group, diluting companionship, and also present some very
significant transportation issues.
3. Do we want to (continue to) suggest a higher-end hotel in light of
the fact that the desire for such is way down on the list of priorities
for our people?
Strategy solutions:
Here are some options we have regarding our hotel strategy this year:
1. Same as we've always done. Three hotels, one lower in price, another
lower in rise, another upscale. "Ain't broke, don't fix it."
2. Single suggested hotel, covering values of thrift, companionship, and
comfort.
3. Primary suggested hotel on the main Strip area (2 above) with a
secondary suggested hotel downtown.

Specific Hotel suggestions:
Bea writes:
I have a friend that is a member of the local LGBT community and is also
the Assistant Manager of the Casino Royale on the strip (between Quad
and Harrahs). It's a Mom and Pop, the only one left on the strip.
It has about 160 rooms recently remodeled. He was going to work on a
special price for DIVA, but he is currently out of town on a family
emergency. I will check with him when he gets back. Even at their
advertised rates, it might be a good alternative and good location. I
will let ya all know if he can work out a special for DIVA.
. . . . .
Annie responds:
Thanks Bea. This sounds like it may be promising. Please let us know
what you find out.
For those who do not know where Casino Royale is, it's immediately north
of Harrah's, right in the area where our people like to stay.
Our timeframe for announcing our suggested hotels is about two weeks
from now, so we do need to have any offers in within two weeks if they
are to be considered.
You can pass this next part on, so he knows about where he needs to be
if he wants to garner a significant amount of the DLV business. The
Flamingo is currently the most economical of all hotels in that area.
The prices as of this morning are as follows:
Sat, Mar 21: $166.00
Sun, Mar 22: $81.00
Mon, Mar 23: $59.00
Tue, Mar 24: $63.00
Wed, Mar 25: $67.00
Thu, Mar 26: $72.00
Fri, Mar 27: $127.00
Flamingo charges a "resort fee" and as of this writing it's $25 per
night, but always subject to change, so to estimate the "total cost of
ownership" for the Flamingo, add $25 to the above rates.
If he can beat those rates, I'm sure we will have no trouble getting
this group to agree to name Casino Royale as a suggested hotel.
As a comparison, the Four Queens downtown is the name that has been
mentioned most as a possibility as a downtown suggested hotel. It had
good ratings from those staying there last year.
As of this morning they show the following rates:
Sat, Mar 21: $139.00
Sun, Mar 22: $42.00
Mon, Mar 23: $42.00
Tue, Mar 24: $42.00
Wed, Mar 25: $42.00
Thu, Mar 26: $42.00
Fri, Mar 27: $99.00
The Four Queens, as of this minute and second, does NOT have a Resort
Fee, so it definitely has a bang-for-buck advantage!
. . . . . . . . . .
Dionne writes:
As an added thought, could the RIO hotel be on our suggested hotel
list? It is located along the EHM/KoH Limo route for convenience and I
enjoyed my dinner at BUZIOS Seafood Restaurant during my recent Oct.
visit.
. . . . .
Annie continues:
The Rio was one of our suggested hotels for DLV 2011. It was omitted
from consideration in 2012 mainly due to the low number of attendees
who reported staying there in 2011 (only 2) and the fact that it was
the lowest rated (both satisfaction and comfort) of our suggested
hotels in 2011.
If you (or anyone) would like to have the Rio (re)considered as a
suggested hotel this year please let us know why you believe the Rio
better covers the needs expressed above (thrift, companionship, etc.)
than do the hotels we are more likely to suggest, such as the IP/Linq,
Flamingo, Four Queens, etc.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
EHM and KOH:
We have spun off the organizing and planning of the EHM/KOH track to a
separate ad-hoc list. If you would like to be actively involved in the
planning of the proposed EHM and KOH activities for DLV 2015 and are not
receiving the mailings, simply reply to this mailing and say that you
are interested in helping.
As of this day, hour, minute, and second, there appears to be a
consensus that the two activities (EHM and KOH) should be unbundled.
The EHM activity will most likely be a lunch session or an early
afternoon session and may or may not be on the same day as KOH.
There is currently discussion of whether KOH should be a DLV-only affair
on an otherwise-closed night at a higher price, or shared with the
general public (as last year) on an already-open evening at a lower
price. There appears to be a leaning toward the latter as of this time
but no clear consensus.
Film at 11. :)

Pole dancing, clubbing, etc.:
Valorie writes:
I plan on organizing the pole dancing class again at Pole Fitness
Studio. This is an easy one to organize as the the instructors at the
studio handle most of the class. This would be mid-day event (2pm?)
that could fill out Wednesday or Thursday depending on the scheduling of
EHM/KOH.
. . . . .
I plan on doing another high-end night club outing but will probably
move it earlier in the week to not clash with closing Friday night at
Paris. Having done Surrender two years straight, I may also try out
another club, perhaps "Light" at Mandalay Bay on Wednesday or "XS" on
Monday.
. . . . .
Turnout for the scavenger hunt was fairly low last year, so I may pass
on that this year. However people do seem to enjoy it so I would
encourage someone to think of an interesting way to reinvent it.
. . . . .
I really loved Red Rock Canyon last year, and would go back again. I
toured the Spring Reserve last year as well and wasn't as impressed.
Stacy, are you going to do the "DLV Tennis Invitational"? I am all
ready to go shopping for a tennis outfit.
Annie, thanks for continuing to improve the infrastructure. I continue
to be impressed by your statistical skills as use complex regression
analysis to figure out why we do the things we do.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
Thanks, Valorie. When you have settled on timeslots for the various
items, just let us know.
As for the clubbing, I was under the impression that it did not compete
with Paris, but followed it. Anyway, your call as to when it happens.
Thanks for the kind words about the systems end. Actually, I really
don't do much hardcore number crunching. I would call it more along
the line of intuitive analysis guided by the numbers. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Dinner on Wednesday:
Sara writes:
Just a quick comment on the Wednesay evening dinner at PF Chang's...
Sherry mentioned that dinner is too early.
PF's has evolved into this earlier time slot in order to better
accommodate EHM. The first year we did this, everyone was rushed to
finish dinner and get over to EHM. By moving dinner up a bit, we
maintained a good turnout (50+) and everything worked out well. Last
year, our dinner number fell to just over 30 because of Night of the
Soiled Doves.
I don't have a pony in the race with respect to EHM or Hustler, whether
one or both happen on the same evening. However, I am ready to be
flexible with the start time should there be a need to change. The
positives about PF Chang's (location, semi-private area that can seat
50+, food prices & especially drink prices if you squeeze in during
happy hour) makes this a good recurring event, not to mention how
awesome their staff has treated us over the years. Just let me know if
the times need to be adjusted and I'll make sure it happens.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
I think there may be a misunderstanding here. It's my impression that
the "too early" concern was about the proposed dinner at KOH, which
appears not to be happening.
As you say, we can tweak the start times of HH and dinner as the
schedule becomes more developed.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Afternoon Social:
Katie writes:
Thanks for the recon Marissa. I kind of thought it might be a bit
pricey.
Ok Girls so how about the Daily Happy hour being at the Linq Mexican
tequila bar?
If I have the right place? Then it is situated in the Quad with an
antrance from the Casino and one opening out onto the south side at the
Linq esplanade. (Locals please correct me if this is not the bar I am
thinking of. I can only go from memory.)
It is perfectly located and a short walk for anyone staying in The Quad
or Flam' or Harrahs.
I need some local research again Marissa if you would do that for me
please? I am sure this is the type of bar which will have a daily
H/Hour and the drinks are advertized at a decent price too, The only
thing I can't find on their web pages is the actual floor plan of where
it is located. I was in LV in September and this looked like a nice easy
spot for all levels of competence.so it might serve well as a nightly
gathering or marshaling spot
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
Ok, I'll change things for now to do the Afternoon Social at Chayo at
the Linq. I tend to agree that it will most likely get a better crowd
with the better prices.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Pub Crawl on Sunday:
Marisa writes:
Robyn and I are planning a HH crawl at the Grand Canal Shoppes at the
Venetian from 4pm until close (HH prices can be found from 1pm-1am) with
prices starting at $3 beer and well drinks.
We'll dine on appetizers or order off the menu and this event (sign up
for headcount) is a drop in or out at anytime.
The focus is to socialize and meet new friends, so we think it will be
good to have it on Sunday.
The HH between 6-9 has limited seating and upscale prices (Wolfgang
Puck), so anyone waiting for the 9pm HH to begin at Zefferino can ride a
gondola, dance at the Bourbon Room, or visit Madame Tussands at the
twilight price.
There is a high level of public exposure, but the first venue (Canonita)
is a short walk from self park or valet.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks Marisa. It's on the schedule.
What sign-up, if any, do you want for this?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Night of the Soiled Doves:
Ginger writes:
Do we want a return Night of the Soiled Doves? If so what night would
work best -- some optional nights too if possible to give me more to
work with.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
Thanks, Ginger.
Night of the Soiled Doves, in its current incarnation, is one of the
more "portable" (with respect to what evening) and scalable of the more
significant activities.
For the time being, let's not drop this into a timeslot until we see how
some of the other less portable activities develop.
I can envision this year's NSD as either an "anchor" activity at a
larger scale, or a track on a multi-track evening as a smaller activity
depending on what the best fit is on a more-developed schedule.
Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday are all possibilities for NSD this
coming year, depending on how things develop and mature.

always take selfies or help each other with pix.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks, Dionne. All it takes to get this on the schedule is for you or
someone else to "adopt" it and check signals with the vendor. If you
would like to run (pun intended) with this one, please do so. This is
very centrally-located so it would be convenient for just about any
morning or afternoon.

you have them.

Orientation:
Dionne writes:
I recall from this April's newbie orientation that I went to the HH @
Bahama and thought afterwards, I should have offered to help with the
Orientation.I will make that offer for DLV 2015, if it's OK.
. . . . . . . . .
We've had a number of people inquire about doing the Orientation.
I'll tell you more or less what I've been telling the others, and
please don't take any of this the wrong way.
The orientation is one activity where if we let everyone who had
expressed interest in it do it, it would easily become totally
unmanageable.
Vera, Katie, and Sara are the ones who have the first refusal rights for
Orientation this coming year. Vera and Katie are, IMAO, exceptionally
well qualified to take the lead on this because they have many years of
DLV experience (12 and 8 years, respectively, IIRC) and they both have a
very good relationship with the rank and file.
The Orientation scored 4.6-something and 4.8-something on the enjoyment
and comfort scale last year. For something attended mostly by shy
newbees, those are excellent numbers. IMAO, they did a great job.
Now, if you (or anyone else) want to become more involved with the
newcomers and help them with any issues they have, there are a number of
things you can do.
First, volunteer to be a Big Sister. Big Sisters are badly needed. This
does not have to be high-maintenance, as you can decide what you are and
are not willing to do within that program.
Second is more informal but very much needed. That is to proactively
circulate, particularly at our larger functions, introduce yourself and
introduce the new attendees to others, both new and returnee. Do things
like pay attention to anyone sitting alone looking excluded, or anyone
giving off vibes like they are about to bolt for the door. We need more
of this kind of attention given to our new people.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Improv at Harrah's:
Beverly writes:
In an effort to build on an already successful Tuesday evening
experience I will be adding the Improv Show at Harrah's to round out the
evening.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks, Bev. It's on the schedule.
Are you planning on doing any kind of group purchase of tickets, or is
everyone on their own to get tickets?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Pamplemousse:
I would like to use the cellphone and past attendance parameters for
Pamplemousse sign-up.
I also need to add a statement indicating dinner there runs longer than
usual, so you may not want to schedule a 9PM show that night. Also,
Pampel uses a single check, so bringing paper money is easier.
If there is to be an evening at Alize, I foresee the same rules
applying.
. . . . . . . . . .
Got it. Thanks. It's been adjusted.
