This is the DLV 2015 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not

Continuing:

Last call for DLV 2014 photos. Call For Photos ends this weekend. If
you have photos which you have not sent in, please do so.
. . . . .

Gina has self-nominated for another term as the "even year' Admin
Committee representative. See item below. Let's keep nominations open
for one more list cycle.
. . . . .

We've had no further comments on name tags, central location, or daily
lunch. Of the three, the only one which has any kind of an action plan
is the daily lunch, which most likely will be adjusted to include more
order-from-the-menu restaurants this coming year.

Now is the season to discuss other logistical issues, including name
tags, central locations, and about anything else.

Admin Committee seat:

Gina writes:

I would be willing to continue in the admin group if the group would
like me too.

Annie responds:

Thanks Gina.

I will second your nomination.

If there are any other nominations for this position, please get them in
during the next list cycle.

If anyone is unclear on what this is, a good description of our
Administrative Committee appears here:

Introducing a project:

Annie writes:

Since things have slowed down, it's a good time to introduce this topic.

I would invite others to participate in this project, particularly those
who have talents for writing, photography, arts, crafts, etc.

Two people on our volunteer force have already expressed interest, and
two others outside of DLVORG have as well. There's room for many more
and if anyone is interested, please say so. Just reply to this mailing
and express interest or ask questions.

The project does not yet have an official name. I've been using the term
"information initiative" in referring to it, for lack of a better name.

The idea is to establish a repository of information on the general
topic of gender, with emphasis, of course, on transgender topics.

One obvious goal of the project is to make needed information
conveniently available to those who go looking for it.
. . . . .

Background:

One very valuable asset we have is our presence on the web. Although
it's difficult to put a dollar value on it, we have over 15 years of
equity built up!

We are very well covered by all of the major search engines.

Many individuals find out about our program by searching for various
items, mostly in the Las Vegas area.

Our most "hit on" page is our Big List of vendors, clubs, and other
resources, it being the target of many such searches daily. Several of
our recent attendees first found out about our program as a result of
web searches which landed on our Big List.

A goal is to increase the exposure of DLV on the web, and to make our
program better known to those who may find it to be of interest.
. . . . .

Needs:

One thing lacking on the web is a comprehensive central repository of
information on gender and gender identity.

Yes, there's a lot out there. However, what is on the web tends to be
fragmented and ephemeral. Dead links galore! Much information is badly
dated, highly opinionated, and often inaccurate to varying degrees.

The large national and international LGBT advocacy groups, those which
tend to show up in web searches, frequently treat the "T" portion as a
sideline and lack depth of coverage.

A "by the people, for the people" collection of information will most
certainly go a long way toward meeting this need.
. . . . .

Resources:

At each one of our recent events, we've had over 150 true subject matter
experts in the area of gender identity.

I would like to see us leverage this expertise and make it available to
those who have the need for it.

We have a lot of talent among us. That is our greatest resource.
. . . . .

Methods:

We have virtually every type of application family available to us.
If there is a need for something to more effectively display our
information to our users, it will happen.

My only concern with deploying items is that they need to be used. We
don't want to present empty blogs, perpetual "under construction" pages,
dead links, stale articles, "Last Updated November 12 1955", etc.

For general articles, photo collections, how-to items, etc., common
blogging (for lack of a better term) software is easily used by both
those who have no technical experience as well as those who are hardcore
geekbabes.

Wiki software allows collaboration among many individuals and allows the
presented information to evolve.

Other applications are available to us if needed.
. . . . .

Content:

The depth of the content is potentially infinite. I would like to see
a "content rich" presentation.

I envision each author having control of what is said and the way their
information is presented, within realistic limits of course. I do not
foresee any kind of need for an "editorial approval" process or anything
like that.

Among the various items which can be produced are:

* "How To" items of various types. A how-to which meets a frequent need
will most definitely be a target of a web search.

* News, information, and commentary.

* Definitions, documentation, etc.

* Personal experience.

* Information. Gender Wiki. Annotated glossary.

* Historical information. Brief bios of noted persons.

* Photography. Documentary, artistic, creative, whatever. People LOVE
photos! Reportage, coverage of local/regional events. Makeover photo
shoots. "How to" items with photos!

* Original artwork. Fiction. Poetry.

* Humor and satire. (Del Mar? Galiano? [sic] 7-11?) :) :) :)

That's only a partial list.
. . . . .

Implementation:

I envision this as building on to the web presence that we have
established over the past 16 years or so and not a totally new endeavor.

We need to leverage the equity we have on the web, and the "gravity"
that our site has in regard to attracting visitors.

I would like to see the project establish a foothold during the
remainder of the 2014 calendar year.

I would like to see a "critical mass" of at least five authors
participating in the project prior to official roll-out.

Writing and editing content can be a very good spare time endeavor. I do
not wish this project to consume an inordinate amount of time and
effort.

The project does need to take a back seat to our primary mission. If
there is ever any kind of a resource conflict between the main DLV
program and this project, the primary DLV program needs to have
priority.

Please consider being part of this project! :)
