Org List:
This is the DLV 2014 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Back on the main track:
Our issue with Thursday has kind of sucked all of the oxygen out of the
ORG air, and it's now time to take a deep breath and take care of all
other items.
First of all, if anything has fallen through the cracks over the past
couple of weeks, please resend or remind. There is a lot of material
coming in and it's very easy for something to get overlooked.
Again, thanks to the Fantasy Ball Team for putting together the plans
for the replacement activity on Thursday.
. . . . . . . . . .
There are a few schedule changes, one which results in a hole to fill
for Thursday dining. See items below.
. . . . . . . . . .
Latest numbers:
This will most likely be the last numbers report to ORG prior to the
rollout of activity sign-up.
As of Tuesday we have 179 signed up to attend. SO count is now up to 28.
The machine-predicted turnout of those signed up so far is 141. These
numbers will appear a bit chaotic right after activity sign-up starts
but will converge on a close estimation as those who sign up are
reconfirmed and those who do not are weeded out and dropped from the
roster.
(Those who use the "dlvr list" please remember to subtract two since our
test attendee has been un-cancelled for sign-up testing.)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Activity sign-up:
The next big milestone is the roll-out of activity sign-up.
THIS IS LAST CALL FOR ANY ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
WHICH NEED A SIGN-UP OR A HEADCOUNT!
To be "on target" this is to come out early next week and there are no
major roadblocks to making it happen.
We will be doing TWO tests on the activity sign-up system this week.
First one is now, and we're asking all, in particular the Coordinators
who have activities on this list, to check the wording, timing, etc.
of the activities on this list.
Please test the activity sign-up system here:
http://www.geekbabe.com/cgi-bin/dlv/dlv2014hc.cgi?1290615300-593
PLEASE NOTE:
THIS LINK IS FOR A TEST ATTENDEE!
THIS IS NOT YOUR FOR-REAL SIGN-UP!
Please feel free to sign the test attendee up for anything and
everything, including such things as concurrent activities to check
the error trapping.
The second test will be a special mailing to you, the volunteers,
testing out the live activity sign-up system. This is "for real" and
has the side effect of letting you, the volunteers, have "head of line"
privileges for activities.
Later this week, probably Friday or Saturday, (most) everyone on this
list will receive their personal activity sign-up e-mail. Just click on
the link in the e-mail and sign-up for real.
Now, if you don't receive this in the first batch, please don't take it
as a snub! The most likely reason is that the e-mail address you use on
this ORG list does not match the e-mail address on your registration.
Lacking any major issues, the main batches of activity sign-up mailings
will go out to the Teeming Millions early next week.
Thanks to all for getting your activities solid early in the process
this year as it makes the sign-up roll-out much smoother. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Laundry list:
Bar Rescue team:
What is the Paypal address to which those who need to pre-pay are
to send?
. . . . . . . . . .
We do have a few needs for volunteers. Those who are not doing anything
yet, you know who you are (and we do too) :) :) please consider taking
on one of these roles.
First of all, we're still running short on Big Sisters.
See Delaney's item below and please consider volunteering, especially
if you are not coordinating any activities this year.
Second is Dining on Thursday, which is our only weak spot on our
schedule.
Since PF Chang has been moved to Wednesday (which is actually a good
fit) we now have only one dining activity for Thursday evening (Satay)
which will not be able to handle everyone who wants to eat with the
group.
We will need at least one additional dining activity. This can be about
anything. Satay is Thai, so a good balance would be something, about
anything, other than Thai.
Ideally, this should include a prior Happy (half) Hour.
Our Thursday dinner schedule of HH at 5:00 and dinner at 5:30 will give
people enough time to prepare for the Fantasy Ball. Unless there is any
specific reason, other dining activities should follow the earlier time.
This can be plain or fancy. Your call.
The only constraint is that if you will be needing a headcount or sign
up, plans, at least as far as location and time, need to be solid within
the next few days. It's easy to add new things to the activity sign-up
prior to roll-out, but very close to impossible after.
If the plans are not in place by activity sign-up time, the only option
is "no sign-up, just show-up" which will not allow any kind of even a
rough guess as to how many to expect.
Please consider doing a dining activity on Thursday. This does count
toward voting status.
. . . . . . . . . .
Coordinator Phone Numbers:
Most of these are now in. Big thanks to those who allowed them to be
published! Those who expressed desires to be a bit discreet will have
the numbers given only to the contact people.
Speaking of which ...
We always like to have at least three listed DLV contact people whose
phone numbers are listed in the Large Final Mailing. We would like as
many of these as possible to be a local call from Las Vegas.
Bob? Are you "go" for being one of our contact people this year?
Any others? Prefer a local number, but we have listed LD numbers on
occasion.
Delaney? Are you "go" for being the primary Big Sister contact number
this year?
. . . . . . . . . . .
Coordinator photos:
In regards to our last test, Ginger writes:
> Looks good, but it would be nice if everyone's photo was available.
We should now have all received photos set up for this.
If you want to see how your photo looks on the schedule, surf here:
http://www.geekbabe.com/cgi-bin/dlv/customsched.cgi
You can simply hit the "I don't care about options ..." button and
the photos will be included on the resulting schedule display.
Those without photos, please consider submitting them. :)
If you sent in a photo and it does not show, scream! Lots has been
happening over the past week or so and it may have been overlooked.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Pre DLV:
Robyn (with the "y") writes:
Has there been a location picked, for the pre DLV?
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
Let's talk about this.
The answer to the question, of course, is no, not as of this time.
In some previous years (such as 2003-2010) we always got a very
respectable crowd at these, very consistently in the 25-35 neighborhood
if not more at some of them.
In 2011, 2012, and 2013, however, our turnout was in the teens at best.
Here's a rundown of the venues we've used over the years for this and
the approximate (from memory) turnout.
2003: Hard Rock (20-ish)
2004: San Remo (30-ish)
2005: San Remo (25 or so)
2006: Freezone (30 or so)
2007: Greek Isles (25-ish)
2008: Alexis Park (35-ish)
2009: PT's Pub Sahara (30-some)
2010: Las Palmas Mariachi (30-ish)
2011: Firefly Paradise (10-12, if that)
2012: Mr. B's (15 or so)
2013: Denny's downtown (12-15 or so)
There's been a lot of speculation regarding the lesser turnouts over the
past few years. It was mentioned that Firefly may have been "too
exposed" and crowded with civilians. It was also mentioned that the lack
of convenient parking (yes, I know, garage below the facility!) was the
reason that Denny's didn't really catch fire. I don't know about Mr. B's
(which was a flash in the pan, in and of itself) as it had a nice bar
and good food, parking out front, and a nonthreatening atmosphere.
I don't know the answer! I still assume that there's a demand to get
together, informally, the day prior to the big event.
Thoughts, gang? Any ideas of how we can get this item to be
well-attended again?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Fantasy Ball is a go:
No objections have been received regarding the Fantasy Ball at the Kings
Of Hustler Club and likewise, no alternate trigger-ready plans were
brought forward. Supporting comments appear below.
Valorie, Marisa, Sherry, and team, please pull the triggers! :)
Thanks go out to all who sought out venues, proposed plans, etc.
We will now close this spin-off list and return you to our regular
program, already in progress. :)

I'm in agreement with this idea. Maybe Bobbie and the Wonderland Express
can be encouraged to make an appearance.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sign-up addition:
When you start the activity signup, I wonder if you could include a
section for "Karaoke with Sheila" similar to that for the Blue Ox. I
would like to get an idea of how many to expect, so a simple binary
choice (definitely yes or definitely no) would be useful. I don't need
as accurate a headcount as for the Blue Ox, but I'd like at least a
ballpark estimate.
. . . . . . . . . .
Done.
You will get a headcount which is somewhat in vicinity of the
ballpark. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Activity map shakedown:
We would like to ask all to please view and shake down the first draft
of this year's activity map.
The use of Google Maps has worked well for two years now and this one is
updated with the venues to be used this year. To view the map, surf
here:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=203735435156617077159.0004b3eef1027d2e404e0
If you are an activity Coordinator or assistant, please be sure that the
venue(s) for your activities are listed and appear in the correct place.
(As of this minute and second, Kings Of Hustler club has not been added
to this map. It will be shortly.)
Also, if there are any technical errors, such as the map failing to load
or displaying wonky or anything, please let us know and a screen shot
would be helpful. Of particular importance are tne numbered and lettered
"pins" which are actually served from the DLV server and not Google.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Big Sisters still needed:
Delaney writes:
I again wanted to thank all those who have volunteered as Big Sisters.
However, I still project we will be short, as we have currently assigned
all volunteers and there are still about three weeks to go, which is a
timeframe in which many new girls sign up, and may request Big Sisters.
Please consider volunteering your experience to assist a less
experienced girl in having a wonderful time at DLV.
Also, should any existing volunteers be willing to help a second girl,
please let me know. If you like, I can hold you in a contingent status
until closer to the event, only assigning a second girl if there are no
other volunteers.
To volunteer as a Big Sister, simply reply to this mailing, or send a
brief note to: bigsister_at_geekbabe.com

PF Chang, etc.:
Sara (no "h") writes:
Because my personal DLV itinerary has changed, requiring that I depart
on Thursday, I would like to move the PF Chang's dinner from Thursday
evening to Wednesday in a similar time slot ... Let's leave it as-is
with dinner at 5:30. The "happy hour" period is more of an arrival
window during which time we can take advantage of cheaper drinks as the
group arrives. (happy hour at 5:00 p.m., dinner at 5:30 p.m.)
I have thought long about this and originally, I wanted PF's to remain a
dinner to lead into EHM. Now that EHM is kaput, I'm not overly concerned
about going up against the Wednesday night activities, particularly NSD.
Certainly the entirety of DLV will not be attending NSD so PF's will be
a good alternative event, even if we see fewer attendees than the 50+
over the last few years.
Also, I am also willing to be "hostess" for Dancing at Paris on Monday
night.
Another item, I have Macy's donating a makeup and/or skincare gift to
raffle at our beginner open house. I'll give it away either during my
short discussion or with the other prizes if we have others.
. . . . . . . . . .
Schedules have been adjusted and you're added to the Dancing on Monday.
Thanks for letting us know.
The Macy's gift will be a welcome addition to the newcomer session.
Thanks for arranging this!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Just You change:
Linda writes:
Amy would like to change her open house from Tuesday 4/01 to Wednesday
4/02, as this would fit better with her currently scheduled makeovers.
Starting time would still be 11 AM. Assuming this is okay with you, I
will submit an "Activity Highlight" later today.
. . . . . . . . . .
All set, Linda, thanks for the update.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
High T:
Vera writes:
> Maybe I'll bring a sign with a high 'T'.
Marilyn, You can have your sign with the "T" on it but just don't hang
some tea bags from it. People may think you're with the Tea Bag Party!
LOL!!!
