JoAnn Sez:
Well, everyone---
We are now starting our programming. This year we are approaching the
program planning process in two phases:
Phase I- [approximately 2 weeks]- Brainstorming possible new ideas;
Phase II - [concluding end of December] - Developing a schedule
of activities.
Addressing Phase I, Annie has compiled two lists:
(1) a list with activity suggestions made via the survey at
the end of last year's Diva Week, and
(2) a list of those activities previously sponsored at past
Diva Weeks.
These should help the Organizing Group to give all of us some new
ideas, as well as, suggestions for making the previous activities (if
done this coming year) will make them fresh, engaging, and possibly
have a fun "twist" to the same "old way". We will be having this open
dialog for the next couple of weeks.
Then we will start Phase II and publish a schedule without specific
activities, but rather, listing time frames for a particular day's
activities and designating the days of the week as to:
(a) maximum attendance seeking single activity evenings,
(b) as to being a multi-track/option evenings with equally
desired activities, and
(c) Feature/Anchor evenings having other very desired activities.
So please don't wait until the last minute before sharing your ideas.
No judgments as to what activities should be, or who will be
coordinating them, just make suggestions. Volunteering and Coordinator
"seeking" will be in Phase II.
Look forward to the coming weeks as we program Diva 2011.

Beginner Open House:
Rosada writes:
I think the Beginner Open House Session is a very good activity,
especially if there are new attendees or attendees with little
experience going out in public. This could easily be determined from
the onset of registration. Some of us "experienced " gals might even
get some benefit from a refresher course once in awhile.
I remember during my second DLV I attended a Beginners Session that
was held in some hotel room. I don't remember who the gal that was
conducting the session was, but she was of oriental decent, very
slim and beautiful. I remember she was scheduled to be married soon
after DLV.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was that from that Beginner's Session, I
took away a lot of valuable information regarding comportment (how to
act/behave like a lady in public) that has helped me immensely over the
years that I have been attending DLV. The boost in my confidence level
grew by leaps and bounds so that going out in public is no longer a
scary/frightening activity. It helped me with such simple skills such as
how/where to put your hands when talking. Most men stick their hands in
the pants pockets (real macho), where most women cross their arms, hold
their hands or hold something in their hands. Sitting in the toilet...I
mean, who would have ever even thought about this...ladies keep their
toes pointed inward when going to the bathroom...where men sit with
their legs spread apart (The Senator Larry Craig stance), and when
eating women slide the fork between their slightly parted lips and
slowly pull it back out through closed lips...when walking keep your
eyes looking forward, head held up high in an assertive manner, and not
looking down towards the ground. I mean these are skills that for women
come naturally.
We guys have to really work hard at remembering them all while we are in
girl mode. Some of the gals at DLV have got them down to a science, and
that is good for them, but I've seen some gals that could benefit from
these Beginner's Sessions. I know I'll be signing up for one, maybe two
next year. I think these Sessions should not be abandoned. My opinion
only!

Annie responds:
Rosada, I think you and I are talking about two different
things.
However, there may be some concepts in common which can be
built upon, if those who go forward with the ideas choose to
do so.
My note referred to one particular activity, three sessions
of it, for which we have very little feedback. The need for
feedback which I'm particularly interested in is based on the
fact that all three sessions of our Beginner Open House in
2010 scored negatively "out of cluster" on the enjoyment section
of the survey. This particular Beginner Open House series was
intended to provide a comfortable setting for rank beginners
to "ease in" to things.
Sarona's original description is this, actually written one year
ago to the week:
+>I also plan to host "open house" all three afternoons
+>from 2 or 3 until 5 or 6, something to allow people to
+>get ready together if desired, or to socialize in a small
+>and private venue before going out.
As of this time, we've heard no active feedback from either
Sarona or from those who attended the sessions.
Sarona? (Break-one-nine, Sarona, got yer ears on?)
I think we need to know if this set of low scores was simply
a fluke, had an explanation, such as the newbees being very
nervous and uptight, or if there's something which needs to
be addressed in the concept.
The Beginner Open House sessions in 2010 were intended as
hospitality related activities.
. . . . .
What you (Rosada) described was one of a few Comportment
Workshops which have happened at DLV over the years. Since
you noted "some hotel room", it was most likely the one
put on by Hidden Woman in 2003.
We've had various activities all sharing a common theme of
self-improvement over the years.
There's no reason that the themes of hospitality and self
improvement could not be rolled into one activity if that's
the way whoever proposes it wants it.
Let's continue on this line of conversation and zero in on
what we can do along these lines for DLV 2011.

Ground Rule concerns:
There appear to be a few misunderstandings regarding the
Activity Ground Rules ...

>>connected to the venue hosting or sponsoring the activity.

Not at all.
That's not the intent of that guideline.
That guideline came about from the situation back in 2005
where we got a bit too cozy with some of the the staff at
one particular venue where we had a large number of activities
tentatively planned. That venue then had a fairly severe
personnel issue and things started getting ugly. We had to
scramble to find a few new venues, and the situation put us
in a major bind.
It's really not intended to apply to attendee-sponsored
activities.
Our need is to have a definite "go-to" person, who is one of
our attendee-volunteers, who is in charge of each activity
from our perspective.

It's always been the Coordinators of record who set the dress
requirements for their activities. Nothing has changed (or
should change) along this line.
The "Cpolicy" document, adopted in 2003, states:
+3. For Major Venue Activities and DLV Mainstream Activities,
+the responsibility for enforcement of dress, behavior, and
+restroom policy lies primarily on the organizer(s) of record.
It's also touched upon in various other documents and is very
well established by precedent.
In most cases, the Coordinators don't state the dress, and
those of us who put the schedule together use various default
terminology such as "casual to dressy", "no slutty/fetish" and
in a few cases we guess. I do remember very clearly a request
from a Coordinator to remove the term "clubby" for suggested
dress for one activity in 2010.
