Joann's words:

Annie's thoughts regarding an organizing strategy are stated below for
2011. They really help to understand the "themes that worked". The
organizational format we have only works when the events are always
changing, the type of event is "fresh" as to its presentation and venue,
and new concepts are introduced, even for the events we have done for
several years.

I will be suggesting (with Annie) in a couple of weeks some simple but
clear understandings that our volunteers need to commit to when
presenting and implementing their events.

The most important objective that I wish we achieve throughout the next
few weeks is an "enthusiasm" factor when each of you presents your
ideas, offer to sponsor events, and in the suggestions you make to build
upon others ideas.

The results of the Diva Week are due to the energy and effort we all
give to each and every event.

Let the program planning begin!

Dates and guns:

Thank you Annie for doing the number crunching....

I was wondering what the tally was for each date.

Every year we try to get the dates that work with the majority.
Unfortunately no matter which date is selected, there will be
those that cannot attend on those dates considering the size
of our group.

Gina did you check if there are any gun shows that are in LV
town during the proposed weeks? It may affect a few votes... :-)

Annie responds:

Well, I'm not Gina {checking DL carefully to be sure} :) but I
do have good news for you. The following URL shows a gun show
to be going on April 2-3 in Las Vegas.

All it takes to get this on the DLV schedule is ... :)

DLV 2011 strategy:

Annie writes:

Here are some of my thoughts regarding the overall strategy
for DLV 2011.

DLV 2010 is a hard act to follow! There's going to be a very
high level of expectation for DLV 2011! The turnout is going
to be high, and the enthusiasm level will be high, and we
need to catch that wave and ride it!
. . . . .

Overall strategy and major gatherings:

One thing that I think worked especially well in 2010 was
the concept of the "slow start". This was JoAnn's idea and I
think it was particularly effective in determining the level
of success of our Welcome Celebration at Firefly.

Another one of our highest of the high spots for 2010 was the
strength of our ending. This was the strong ending that we had
hopes of for many years! I really want to see something equally
as strong for an ending in 2011. :)

I do think that two is the "right-size" number for single-track
maximum-attendance gatherings, and if maximum attendance and
peak enthusiasm are indeed goals for these, I'm suggesting that
we again consider Monday and Friday for these.

As far as our major gatherings go, there were several factors
which made the two of them so highly successful in 2010.

One was the lack of a barrier to entry, or a charge "just to
walk through the door" or any one-size-fits-all type of thing.

Let's face it, if there's any kind of cover charge, even one
which appears modest to many of you, we will not get our maximum
turnout! That's a fact of life. You can call some people "cheap"
if you want, but that's they way people behave in the real
world!

Another was hitting a balance between "mainstream-ness" and
comfort. I think that the Firefly at the Plaza hit that
sweet spot. Bahama Breeze was more exposed, but by that time
the newbees were more accustomed to the public.

Full menu! "Party menus" suck! QED! They encourage some to
eat elsewhere, thus arriving late (or not at all) or leaving
early. Both venues sold far more food than they would have
sold should they have insisted on a limited offering.

Another factor of the success of both was the presence of
our more gregarious attendees, who have other options and
often times use them, but chose last year to make our
gatherings their preferred options. This adds to the overall
quality of, and the size of the crowd. (Nothing attracts a
crowd, like a crowd.) :)

Well-thought-out follow-up activities after. Beauty Bar
after the opener. Dancing at Paris after the finale. Both
were low-maintenance "just show up" activities, but they
were both well-received and attracted about 1/3 of the
previous activity's gang. Again "no cover, no minimum,
no barrier to entry" helped with both of these.

I also think that another "right size" concept is two nights
of single or double-tracked feature activities, and two
nights of smaller multi-track activities.

As JoAnn has stated, variety and innovation are Good
Things<tm> and we need to strive for these concepts. While
capitalizing on last year's event is also a Good Thing,
simply doing a rewind-reply of DLV 2010 would be a Bad Thing.

Onward and upward! :)

Abstain:

Gina writes:

Okay,

I have a question, why would you abstain from the vote? Is it
that you have no pressing opinion, or can or can't go regardless
what the date is?

Curious minds need to understand... This is a pretty important
decision.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

I considered abstaining on this vote for the reason that both
of the timeframes are about equally convenient for me. I did
cast a vote, however, with the intent of withdrawing it in the
event of a tie.

I'm also somewhat surprised by the number of abstains on this,
but I figure that they were because both timeframes were either
equally convenient or equally unworkable to those abstaining.

Date disappointment:

Holly writes:

Well, I am disappointed. The date chosen makes it impossible
for me to attend or participate in DLV 2011. My sincere hope
that you have a successful and outstanding event next year.

Vote update:

One late vote was received, dated as being sent early
Tuesday, the 26th.

The outcome of the measure would not have been affected had
this vote been on time and counted.
