This is the DLV 2010 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not

Big Thanks:

First of all, we all owe a big round of applause for Kimberly
Kael, JoAnn, Gina, and Other Annie (Annie A.) for stepping in
there and answering the call for assistance on the golf
deposit!
. . . . .

Thanks to all who have sent in recent updates.

Speaking of which, if you send in anything and don't see at
least some kind of a reference to it over the next few ORG
mailings, please remind me. When lots of small items start
coming in over a short time, it's easy to have them fall
into a crack.
. . . . .

As we move toward our final stretch, we need to be very aware
of any potential snags, foul-ups, impending facility closures,
or anything else which may threaten or affect any of our
scheduled activities.

If any trouble develops, it's important that you let the group
here know ASAP so we can deal with it.

Also, we need regular touch-base reports on our major planned
activities. Thanks to those who have kept us up to date. I do
plan to be somewhat assertive in checking signals over the
next couple of months.

I'm asking all to keep checking the working schedule and to
please report anything which does not appear to be correct.
Watch for things like date/time in error, location as TBA
where a location has been selected, etc.
. . . . .

As of Monday morning we have a total validated headcount
of 142. 111 of them are returnees, 31 are newcomers. 24 SO's
are included in the count.

Two validations pending as of Monday.
. . . . .

In looking over the calendar and taking a trip to the real
world, I would like to move the activity sign-up start to
the week of March 22. If there are any objections to this,
or if anyone does not think this is realistic, please speak
up ASAP. This gives us three (plus) calendar weeks for
sign-up, which is comparable to recent years' schedules.

This will mean that Sunday, March 21 will be the drop-dead
absolute hard-stop final cut-off date for the scheduling
of any activities which require some kind of a sign-up or
headcount.

If anybody thinks that these dates are unrealistic or in
any way unworkable, please speak now.

Pity Party:

Mindy is requesting some local assistance for the Pity Party.

Pity Party fans?

Mindy writes:

>As you all know the pity party is near and dear to my heart.

>I would love to see it take place in the sprit it was born
>from. If somebody local could check with The Escape Lounge
>I think it would be good there. Seemed to me it was fine a
>couple of years ago. I won't have the time to prebuy food
>this time but we could think of something even if its just
>a pizza collection.

>Tue Wed or Thur would seem to work as an alternative to
>something with a higher cost. If we could get some feedback
>I will run it with some local help.

Thanks, Mindy.

As for scheduling, Tuesday already has six activity options,
so I would strongly recommend another night for the PP unless
one of them falls through, and even if we lose one, Tuesday
is still well-covered.

It could work on Wednesday, but there is more of a need for
a strong local activity on Thursday, so that's when I would
recommend for the Pity Party.

We do need a local volunteer to work with Mindy on this.
. . . . .

Now, with the discussion of the Jam Session on the Discussion
Forum, and Mindy's suggestion of the Escape Lounge, I think
it would be worth considering combining the Pity Party and
the Jam Session into two sequential activities in one venue.

I think that the two could mutually reinforce each other and
the venue would gain the "entertainment" on a weekday evening.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Jam Session:

Much of this is from a conversation on the Discussion Forum,
and I'm copying it here since I think there is a potential
good fit as I've noted above.

Susan R writes:

>In the past 2 years there have been questions about having
>a plugged in session. If there is any interest out there,

>system and have little experience at using one. Anybody out
>there who can help? I'd like to have more of an open mike

And Elise responds:

>i can probably borrow a simple, but effective PA set (2
>speakers, amp/mixer, up to 4 mics -- it has been used
>successfully on a number of different gigs & should be ok
>for anywhere i can imagine we might do this).

>this proposed "jam session" has potential to be a great
>"activity." (& something else we can do on our roller skates :)
. . . . .

I would suggest you work with Mindy and do the Pity Party and
the Jam Session sequentially in the same venue. Mindy has
suggested the Escape, and I'm sure they would appreciate the
additional bar business on a Thursday.

Roller Derby updates:

Rosada writes:

Thanks, Rosada. I'll update the schedule notes.

Thanks for the updates, Rosada.

Please keep us informed of any changes in location as soon as
you can, since that info goes on the final schedule and map
and we do want that to be accurate.

Art tour and such:

Marisa writes:

>Disappointing!! The SNMFA at Fremont is now, closed on
>Sundays, so I need to make a change.

Thanks for the update, Marisa. I'll scratch this pending a
replacement.

>If we need something yet,I have several ideas on the strip in
>the same time frame.

Please bring your ideas forward. We do have a need for more
options on Sunday, both general activities and dining.

>I'd like to put the Firefly on Tuesday

Here's the story on Tuesday evening. ...

We can use another dining option, and I'll move the Firefly
over to Tuesday for Eating Out Night, which rounds that out
nicely. I think there's still room for one more EON dining
option (buffet? upscale?) but that's not a glaring need.

For after-dinner activity options, I think we need to say
that Tuesday evening is full. Even if we lose one of the
planned activities I think we're well-covered for Tuesday.

>and if Vivian Wells is thinking of a Fremont Street event
>yet, maybe that would work along with Firefly on Tuesday
>evening.

We haven't heard from Vivian Wells for some time. Her
proposed FSE thing was removed from the planning list for
non-response to several "pings" and no other volunteer
stepping up to take it on.

If we do a FSE thing, it really needs to be Sunday and not
Tuesday, since FSE is very "portable" compared to most of
the things planned for Tuesday.

As I have said, I think an informal FSE gathering on Sunday
would work well as a mainstream option if we would have a
"safer" alternative, such as a bar gathering (Escape, PT's)
to capture those who just aren't ready for the "Experience"
on Fremont Street.

FSE could be a very low-maintenance thing. All we really
need to do is designate a specific touch-base location.

>I also hope to find out tonight about Level 107 schedule,
>they've been changing and starting new events. As of
>now they don't have live smooth jazz or anything special
>on Monday or Tuesday. Everyone seems to be making changes
>since the 1st of the year.

I'll keep Level 107 on the schedule for Tuesday for now.

If it needs to be moved, I still think Tuesday would be
more than adequately covered. The greatest need is for
Sunday, as I've said, and if Level 107 is open that
evening, it could work.

Please let me know how to adjust things.

Bahama Breeze and Big Sisters:

Thanks, Nora.

Alanna, there is your contact person. Nora has recently
touched base, so you just need to run the rest of the way.

All: Alanna is still in need of a "Second Chair" on this. This
will be a reasonably easy one, since Alanna will be doing the
"grunt work" of calling and negotiation. The major duty for
this will be to show up, be there, greet newbees, and make
sure things happen as planned. This qualifies for voting status.
. . . . .

>I have not received any more Big Sister Volunteers. I am
>leaving for Europe on Wednesday and will be away for two
>weeks. I was hoping to have all the requests paired up
>before I leave.

Gang, do we have any more Big Sister volunteers? We are
particularly in need of Big Sisters who will be present
during the first part of the week. Yes, you can set limits
on what you are and are not willing to do in your role of
Big Sister.

Golf updates:

Gina writes:

>I'm good for the other C-note if nobody else comes up with

Everybody involved gets a big "Atta-Girl" on this one! I am
very impressed at the degree of response to the call! :)

Bang-bang, shoot-shoot:

Thanks, Gina. Please keep us in the loop.

Britney has been quiet lately:

Thanks for the update, Britney.

We certainly hope that you will be able to join us this year
for as little or as much as you can. :)
