Vote results:

First item of business ...

Regarding the proposed Ending Formal, votes are in, polls
are closed. Here are the numbers:

For: 7
Against: 11
Abstain: 6

Last vote was dated 20:48:43 PST Monday and polls were
closed 20:48 PST on Wednesday.

No late votes were received, no invalid votes were received.

Motion fails to carry.

I did a quick review of the recent survey responses from
the ORG people, and the reason for the failure of the motion
to carry is quite evident. The primary concern expressed, by
a better than three to one margin over other concerns, was
the price point, both from a personal standpoint, and in
consideration of those of modest means.

Other cited concerns were the food, the "convention-ness"
and seclusion of the activity, the various logistics, and
the concern for Glamour Boutique suffering a possible
financial loss should sign-ups, pay-ups, or turnout be low.

"Voter turnout" on this issue was high, with over 2/3 of the
members of voting status returning their ballots, higher
than we usually see.

Nora, when you next speak with Amy, please convey our thanks
for the offer. It was appreciated, but when all factors were
considered, the gang here did not believe it was our best
option for a final evening get-together.

I'm sorry if anybody is disappointed by the outcome. I think
the motion was considered fairly by all, but the concerns
just outweighed the many positive aspects of the proposed
affair.

Please see notes on alternatives below.

Raw votes appear toward the end of the mailing.

You'll notice that several comments were removed from the
votes, as several individuals obviously felt a need to
explain their votes.

I would ask that those who feel such a need either make
those comments in advance of the vote in the future, when
the floor is open for discussion, or after the vote as a
post-mortem, which would be appropriate now if you wish
to do so.

I really don't think anyone has to explain or justify
their vote.

Those of voting status are the ones we trust to make the
critical decisions regarding the direction of DLV, and
each individual is entrusted to base their vote upon
any factors they deem appropriate. As I look back over
the years and the votes on various issues, I can't think
of any case where an obvious "bad call" was made by the
voting members.

Our alternative options:

Let's discuss our alternative options for Friday evening,
and our options for a dress-up activity, whether they are
one and the same or not.

I am (still) assuming that the gang prefers one featured
maximum-attendance gathering on the final evening.

This (one big maximum-attendance she-bang) is not "in stone",
but I think this is appropriate and I get the feeling others
think so as well.

The option cited multiple times on the survey was the Bahama
Breeze.

Nora, would you be willing to touch base with Bahama Breeze
and see if they can accommodate us, with the same arrangements,
for Friday, April 23?

Any objections to this approach, anyone?

Should we go with the Bahama Breeze, I see no problem with
designating this as a "dress-up" affair, going as far as to
say something like "dressy/formal encouraged, business casual
at minimum" for a dress code for the activity.
. . . . .

Should this not work out, or be met with objections, I can
envision some other options, general and specific, such as ...

* An alternate restaurant-based gathering, such as the Blue
Ox way-west, Carluccio's, one of the larger PT's, etc.

* A large single-track early-evening happy hour, 2-3 smaller
dining options, 2-3 after-dinner options, one of which is
Paris, already on the schedule.
. . . . .

Another possibility, but with an obvious drawback, is ...

Nora writes:

>Just returned from the Blue OX east. It is on Flamingo and
>Sandhill. Quite a distance from the strip. Too small and can
>not accommodate a large crowd. No private room.

>There is another Blue Ox (Sports bar) a few blocks away.
>I have not been there but I understand that this one is
>much larger. I hope to get there to check it out. But even
>if it can accommodate our group it is quite a distance to
>travel and I would not recommend it. Same holds true for
>the remaining Blue Ox on the west side.

Thanks, Nora.

Should Bahama Breeze either not work out or get the thumbs
down here, I think we should explore one of the larger Blue
Ox facilities. They may be a bit out of the way, but they
are, to an extent, known to us.

Should we go with some kind of a "downscale" thing on Friday,
we could designate Trevi on Wednesday as a "dress-up" affair.

In other news:

Our validated headcount now stands at 108. This is after
some adjustments were made to deal with cross-registered
couples, which knocked down the count a bit. This is the
first time we've broken 100 prior to newcomer registration.

Speaking of which, newcomer registration for list members
opens in just a few days, and a general mailing will go
out this weekend announcing this and other items.

Mailing list joins and web site hits remain high. Discussion
Forum activity remains moderately consistent. Everything
points to a high level of interest toward this year's event.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Laundry list:

This is the first time this year I've posted a do-it list
under this name.

What I call the "Laundry List" (known to some as the "Nag
List") is a list of open and hanging items which need some
kind of attention.

I ask that everyone please read this list each time it's
posted, as new items are always being added, usually toward
the top, and give us some kind of a response if your name
is called. Even a response of "hold on, I am thinking about
it" or even "sorry, I am no longer interested" is appropriate,
just so you show some sign of life when there is a hanging
item in your name.

And -- if your name is not on the list, feel free to jump
in, adding what you like, and volunteering to take on some
of the activities which are not yet adopted.

Anyway, the list ...
. . . . . . . . . .

First, a few non-activity items ...

Kumiko? Pin Project?

Will this be happening this year?
. . . . .

Kimberly Kael? Pretty-printed schedule?

Are you willing to do this again this year?
. . . . . . . . . .

And some activity-related items:

Rosada? Your Roller Girl thing?

>From the chatter on the DLV Discussion Forum I'm assuming
this is a "go", is this correct?

If so, preferred timeslot for this?
. . . . .

Ginger? Mary Beth? Kimberly Kael?

I'm showing Ginger host(ess)ing the lunch on Monday,
Wednesday, and Thursday; Mary Bety on Tuesday; and
Kimberly Kael on Friday. Do all of you agree with
this?

Lunch locations? Now is the time to fill in the blanks.
. . . . .

Pity Party fans?

Since the big IAC bash is now off, please feel free to
make plans for either a stand-alone Pity Party or one
combined with some other activity.
. . . . . . . . . .

Let's go over the schedule, looking for the weak spots,
any trouble spots, etc.

Sunday:

+11:00am: Religious services (Metropolitan Community Church)

MCC now has two services on Sunday morning, the "Joyful
Morning Service" at 9:00am and the "NewSong Service" at
11:00am.

I'm tentatively putting the 11:00 service on the schedule,
as I think that's the more realistic for a better DLV
turnout.

However, for this to remain on the schedule, we do need it
to be "adopted" by a volunteer. This is low-maintenance.
Two of the volunteers who have done this in the past will
not be with us this year.

All you have to do is agree to be there, look out for other
DLVers, particularly newcomers, greet them, and, uh, as I
said, be there. :)

Volunteers?
. . . . .

Do we need a lunch on Sunday?

Yes? No? Survey says ... ?????
. . . . .

+6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
+7:00pm: Dinner options (Various)

We need (at least) one more dining option for Sunday evening.

A buffet? Food court? Ethnic? Vegan? Fatburger? :)

Volunteers? Can be plain or fancy, your choice.
. . . . .

Now let's talk about Sunday evening ...

+9:00pm: After-dinner common gathering (TBA) - mv

I'm thinking that it might be in our best interest not to
try a single-track gathering Sunday evening, since that
requires us to find yet another large place that is agreeable
to all.

I think maybe a two-track evening is more appropriate, with
two informal gatherings, one very mainstream, the other safe.

Mainstream could be something like Fremont Street Experience,
and safe could be something like Escape Lounge.

Comments?

Other ideas?
. . . . .

+Monday:

IMAO, Monday is solid!
. . . . .

Tuesday:

+7:00pm: Eating Out Night (Various)

I would like to see 1/2 more dining options in here, since
we want to capture as many of our people as we can and we
need more capacity.

Doesn't have to be fancy.

Gina? Famous Daves?

Tracy? M Resort?

Others? Volunteers?
. . . . .

Wednesday:

+2:00pm: SO and Partners Get-together (TBA) - ms

Bob? Any decision as to a location?
. . . . .

For Wednesday evening we have two "tracks", the Trevi-Limo
track (both dress-up, very mainstream, somewhat spendy)
and the Quiet Evening-Pajama Party track (informal, safe,
inexpensive) but the two combined can handle only about 1/2
of our predicted in-town attendees.

A Pity Party type thing would work here.

This might also be a good timeslot for the Jam Session.

M Resort gathering?

Ideas?
. . . . .

Thursday:

Night Of The Soiled Doves can handle less than half of our
anticipated in-town crowd.

We need a second-track option of some kind.

+6:00pm: Local Happy Hour (TBA) - ms
+7:00pm: Local Dinner (TBA) - ms

It could be very simple, meet somewhere for drinks, then
do dinner, or it could be something very different.

Again, something like a Pity Party or M Resort gathering
would work here too.

Volunteers?
. . . . . . . . . .

And a few items which have been stuck in a holding pattern
for some time ...

Tracy?

M Resort?

Ping Tracy!
. . . . .

Britney? Diane? Others?

Boat Tour? Will this happen this year? Going once.
. . . . .

Jam Session? Susan R? Any news? Timeslot?
. . . . .

Ginger? SBS Social?

Any news?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Volunteer status:

Michelle (NZ) writes (first-person, no quoting):

Hi

I've put off doing this for a few weeks now but reality is
setting in and I'll be travelling on business in a week or
so, so it needs to be done!

There is ALMOST NO CHANCE short of winning the lottery of
me coming to DLV this year.

My contract finished with a long term client last year and
I took a punt on a upcoming contract being available almost
immediately after we returned from out trip Italy. Things
didn't quite work out, the contract took 5-6 weeks longer
than expected to be sorted but other issues came into play
like some over due tax I need to pay off, spending (much)
more in Italy than expected and the impact of the recession
in general on opportunities etc.

The other thing that comes into play is that Susan is not
that well. Her leukaemia drugs while apparently dealing to
the white blood cells are also impacting the red ones,
causing an increasing anaemia problem. While I'm confident
that the doctors will address that with additional drugs it
won't happen overnight and April is too close to take a
chance on.

Airfares are higher than I wanted as well, although not
necessarily unreasonable. I was hoping to pick up some
during the annual post New Year sales on Air NZ but the
dates for DLV don't coincide with offers that were
made :-(

I therefore would like to unvolunteer from both the Trevi
dinner and the Joes Crab & Steak EON activities. I'm doing
this now to:

a) Throw open to the floor for anyone else to pickup and
run with them, and

b) Not do this at the last moment and leave some gaps in
the schedule.

While I am disappointed in not being able to travel to
Vegas, miss DLV and miss seeing many of my friends from
past years I have come to terms with not being able to
attend this year. In many ways its surprising I haven't
had to pull out in the past.

I will continue to monitor and read whats happening with
DLV as long as you are all prepared to put up with me!
. . . . .

Thanks Michelle.

I know I speak for all when I say that you and Susan will
be dearly missed this April! :(

Please pass on our regards and wishes to Susan, whishing
her the absolute best outcome.
. . . . .

To all, Ginger has agreed to take over the coordination of
the Trevi dinner on Wednesday and the Joe's Eating Out
Night on Tuesday. Big thanks to Ginger for jumping in and
taking this on!

Artisan update:

FYI:

Apparently things are happening at the Artisan:

>From the KNTV web site:

+The Artisan Hotel gets new owners

+The Artisan Hotel wasn't paying its bills, wasn't paying
+its employees and had more health violations than customers.
+That was the case over the last five months as exposed in
+an ongoing Contact 13 investigation.

+Now there are big changes, big plans and new owners at The
+Artisan.

You can ReadAllAboutIt here:

http://www.ktnv.com/global/story.asp?s=11856252

We've used the Artisan in the past, and if it were not for
the fact that it's a nightmare to get to (despite being so
close), I might suggest it again. It may be good for an
option on Tuesday. Maybe even a local option for Thursday.
