Ride share eliminated:

No opposition to eliminating the ride share program or
declaring such by acclamation. >>BANG<< {gavel strike}
Done deal! Let's move on. Thanks for the thoughts and
discussion. Some remaining discussion below.

As has been discussed, this now-carried motion does
nothing to prohibit or discourage any carpool or other
transportation efforts connected with a specific DLV
activity.

Thanks to Kimberly for raising this motion.
. . . . .

Please continue the discussion on other topics of late
while we consider the central hotel issue. In particular
we've had no discussion or comments about the overall
strategy of the slow start, large gathering on the second
evening, etc. Silence implies consent! :)

Hotel strategy:

The concept of a "central hotel" does have some proponents
among the volunteers.

>From a strategic standpoint, there are two approaches to
this concept.

1. Designate one and only one hotel as our "Central Hotel"
for DLV 2010 and announce this hotel and no others as the
sole suggested hotel for DLV 2010.

2. Suggest a number of hotels, as we have been doing, but
designate one of these as "primary" or "more suggested",
that hotel then being the "Central Hotel" for DLV 2010.

As is obvious, the two strategies are mutually exclusive.

I would like to consider these options in sequence,
beginning with the more constraining option and should
that fail, continuing with the more permissive option.

I would like to have this particular issue settled long
before we discuss the actual property or properties to
be used as our hotels for 2010.

The first motion (below) is for one and only one suggested
hotel. Should this be seconded, it will be an up/down vote
on the concept of naming one and only one hotel for DLV
2010 attendees. This motion does not mention any particular
properties.

Should this motion fail, I'll raise another motion for
declaring one of our suggested hotels as "primary" or
"more/most suggested", again, without regard to any
specific properties.

For those who prefer the case where we designate two or
more hotels, but name one as "Primary" or "More Suggested",
please sit tight, don't second or vote for the current
motion, and let it run its course.

I've said several times that I'm lukewarm at best to the
idea of a central hotel. I personally do not think it's
necessary or desired. However, I am not everyone. Others
may consider it to be a much higher priority.

I'm not as opposed to the idea of a central hotel as
I was in the earlier days of DLV. Back in the formative
years of DLV there were desires by some to mold DLV to
be more along the lines of the mainline TG conventions.
That was what many of the attendees were familiar with
and that was what they were comfortable with. There was
even talk of such things as moving some of our big on the
town activities into central hotel facilities. {GAG!}

I haven't heard any pressure at all in recent years to do
anything like this. It's been just the opposite with the
yearly "mainstream mainstream" chant! :)

Anyway {said while patting hair in Linda Richman style},
discuss amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic. ... :)

Central hotel:

Vivian Chen writes:

>I'm for a central hotel.

>It doesn't have to be anything official that requires
>negotiations with the hotel itself.

Thanks, Vivian.

If negotiated rates or other items are to happen, it will
be up to those who see those as a priority to make them
happen.

In the past we've had good luck negotiating with the St.
Tropez, thanks to Nora's efforts, but really no luck at
all in getting anything of substance from any other
properties.

Ride share, hotels, costume shops:

Kat writes:

>I second the move for elimination of ride share or probably
>in reality fifth or sixth the motion :).

Several have spoken in favor of this (eliminating it, that
is). Since there have been no objections to declaring this
by acclamation, it's now eliminated.

>We signed up for it last year and no one ever rode with us.

This has been reported by others. It's been the case for
many years that there have been more available seats than
bodies who need them, but the issue has been matching
the willing drivers to those who need the rides.

>I think in some cases (soiled doves, lake mead ect) we can
>just do a "need a ride" at the origination point and that
>will cover those issues but a program that has to be
>followed and tracked and "officially" DLV should be scraped.

>We are all big people and can ask if we need a ride.

Agree.

I also see no formal connection between our long-standing
ride share program and the individual carpool efforts for
particular activities.
. . . . .

Costume shops:

>I am in contact with three costume shops in the area and
>while one flatly told me "we don't do that" (halloweentown
>kinda figured they wouldn't) the other three seem more than
>willing and I am in the process of talking to them to set
>up a free demonstration of thier makeup for approximatley
>20. I would hope this would be well recieved.

>I do not want anyone to lose money but there are a few
>who can not afford a make over and this might be nice.

>Just a daytime alternative.

Thanks, Kat.

I really have not considered this from the cost-containment
perspective, I admit. I am very aware that the cost of
makeovers has discouraged many of our attendees.

I do have one concern. We do need to emphasize both to the
vendors and the participants that we are looking for
"street" looks as opposed to "stage" looks. The survey
comments specifically mentioned such things as "Halloween"
and "drag show", and those are the looks we specifically
want to avoid. We want to help our people to learn the
appropriate looks for mainstream public, both daytime and
evening.
. . .

One related strategic item which we need to discuss, but
have not so far, is scheduling of commercial activities.

Yes, this is a segue into daytime scheduling strategy. :)

In the past our strategy has been to limit any commercial
activities (vendor open houses, makeup demos, workshops,
etc.) to one vendor per day. However, with our three
regular vendors (Glamour Boutique, Studio Lites, Harmony
Nails) plus Ginger's two or more sessions, plus your
session(s), we may not be able to keep up the exclusive
day concept.

We need to consider the needs of our attendees plus be
considerate of the vendors and give each one as much of
a "clear channel" during their alloted time(s) as is
practical.

Anyway, please move forward and continue. :)
. . .

>And the ladies told me if you come in alone they will be
>more than happy to help. I will nail it down and get
>names and times hopefully by the enod of next week.

The one thing I think we need to emphasize this coming
year is that our vendors will welcome our attendees at
any time they are open for business, not just during the
designated "Open House" or special activity hours.

>I think a lot of us are going to be there in October and
>I am certain ideas will occur then we will be there and
>so will a few of the others I know through DLV. We all
>have places we have eaten and had drinks and we can all
>compare notes. We live in a very conservative place to
>Vegas gives us freedom that nowhere else does.

Thanks, Kat! :)
. . . . .

Central hotel:

>Central hotel GREAT idea maybe we can get good rates but
>even if we can not if there was a central place that would
>be wonderful and maybe easier on signup and things well at
>least easier on us as attendees.

>I think DLV could pick one (anyone really) and if you want
>to stay there then please do if not then just know that is
>the place and it would be great.

The selection of a primary hotel, either an exclusive one
or one more suggested of several, needs to be a vote. We
have many different and opposing opinions on which hotels
are best, and will probably never all agree on which
particular hotel will be best for all.

Considerations include such things as cost, TG-friendliness,
location, available amenities, and a host of other factors.
. . . . .

>Keep up the good work us newbies are trying but it is nice
>to know some of the issues are already being considered
>and what we can bring will help but also gives us as
>newbies an idea of how much work you really put it.

Thanks, Kat.

I think many of the attendees do not realize what it takes
to plan and pull off an event such as Diva Las Vegas. Our
model is less intense than that of the traditional TG
convention, but it does still require effort.

A shameless plug:

For those of you who would like to get away and be yourself
for a few days in October, Pinkfest is happening in Chicago
and we would love to have any of you join us.

Pinkfest is a "Vacation, not a convention" (sound familiar?)
but it's much smaller than DLV and probably will be for the
foreseeable future.

Pinkfest 2009 happens from Thursday, October 22 thru Sunday,
October 25.

Our very own Ginger is acting as Social Director for Pinkfest
2010 and she is working on a very exciting schedule which
will include such things as a lighthearted adult comedy
theater, upscale and casual dining (including, yes, "Lunch
With Ginger"), and, of course, an ample helping of that
Quality Social Time<tm> which we love so much. :)

Motion on the floor:

<begin motion>
The DLVORG group shall designate one and only one suggested
hotel for DLV 2010. The suggested hotel will be selected by
popular vote by those of voting status, in accordance with
established procedure, with the hotel garnering the most
votes being designated as the sole suggested hotel.

In the event of a tie, a run-off vote will be held with
the Project Manager voting only if the run-off round should
result in another tie.

This rule shall apply only to the DLV 2010 event and not
carry forward to future years.
<end motion>

Do we have a second? Do we have discussion?
