Bowling & Movies:

Amber Michelle writes:

Ashley im interested in that info for the show.

Id like to do bowling on thursday this year. And since its early
enough id like some feedback about the movie outing idea-saturday
afternoon maybe? or Friday evening? is there enough interest in an
activity like that? It would be at the Palms they have a great theatre
there.

Church and organ concert:

Grace writes:

I will not arrive until afternoon on Sunday 22nd so will not go to MCC
on that day but I will be going the following week (leaving Monday
afternoon). I can help with arranging something on 29th like a Retro
show if there are enough takers.

The organ concert might not be on because I haven't found a suitable
venue where there is a Wurlitzer or Morton etc. It seems that the only
one that might have been available was in the Fiesta and that's gone.

There are a couple in private residences but I have to be very careful
in not compromising my career for the sake of DLV. T-Girl activities are
frowned on by many so I don't really want to mix my two life-styles.
However, don't dispair at the moment because I may come up with
something.

Golf and Slots:

Mindy writes:

hi girls..

need to firm up the golf early if possible this year.

got some ideas to make it better but cant proceed until we get agreement
on the day.. wed seems to be a good idea.. wed is a laid back kinda day
on the schdule so far and removes golf from the limo night and the
energy conflict.

unless there is some substantial feedback we will go with individual
play again this year.

i would like to see and early cutoff for discussion on the day. we can
continue the discussion on format of the tournament for a while yet. as
soon as the day is frim i can get the rates out to the group. as we
have had a good relationship with the course the past few years i hope
the rates will be about the same as the past year. as most of you know
it was a substantial reduction over past years. ite seem that desert
rose really wants to keep the tournament there.

slot tourn.

i have had a couple of meetings with the owner and manager of the blue
ox. the format they suggest is 50/30/20 split of the buy ins. the blue
ox will provide additional prizes for high 4 of a kind ect. the normal
buy in for the tournaments is $10 but it is up to us what kind of buy in
we want as the buy ins are returned 100% in the prize fund.

Hi Ladies, some suggestion on tournaments

I am playing in a toun. this weekend called Ryder Cup which is 3
different 6 hole formants scramble, best ball and medal play but I
think the best bet would be 9 holes best ball and 9 holes medal play,
with 5 strokes over par the highest score you can take example par 3
highest 8 or par 4 highest 9 this way you would not be playing the same
hole all day, this means we would be playing in teams

What do you girls think?? We are allowed to THINK.

Here are two "No" votes for the Scramble. (Jenni and me) We would like
a full golf game. Golf is one of the main reasons we come to DLV. :)**

Ending Bash:

Annie writes:

I am going to make a semi-serious proposal for an ending series of
activities.

I would like to entertain feedback and discussion on this, both positive
and negative.

Please don't worry. If you respond, you will not get jumped on to do any
work. :) Some preliminary legwork has already been done. I don't expect
any volunteer shortage for this one.

One goal I want us to go for this coming year is greater overall
attendance and participation throughout the week, and particularly
on the weekend evenings. We do draw and gather over 100, but very
few things we do seem to draw more than 50-60% of them.

I think the issues of suboptimal participation, weak endings, lack
of new volunteers, and bitching about petty personal quirks are all
interrelated, and related to one concept we've downplayed over the
past few years.

I see the anticipation of a strong climax in the weekend adding to the
enthusiasm and exuberance of the goings-on during the week.

Little Bang on Friday, Big Bang on Saturday.

I think the ideal would be first a "little bang" on Friday, beginning
with Nora's thing at BB, followed by well-planned and well-executed
options such as dancing, socializing, gaming, late show, etc., (but
none of this on-the-spot chaotic planning that results in the group
scattering to the winds) in a mix of safe and mainstream venues.

Follow this by a can't-be-missed Saturday, beginning with Ginger's
SBS thing, then later a big dress-up Happy Hour (slash) Dinner (slash)
Mixer, perhaps an option for a Big Show, and then finally a
(well-planned) into-the-wee-hours drink-out in a friendly lounge.

I think a weekend like that would be the magic bullet for a successful
"on the uptick" ending for an overall-successful DLV.

Now -- to get to the point we're missing ...

One big obvious forest that I think we can't see because of all of the
clutter of the trees is the fact that the opportunity to dress is really
the big magnet that draws (the majority of the) people to DLV.

We've been in denial of this, and our recent (but necessary) attention to
BDR issues has obscured it even more.

(Am I on drugs when I say that the opportunity to dress is the reason
that most of our people come? If anybody disagrees with this, please
say so.)

The more I think about it, a large maximum-turnout thing really has to be
a dress-up thing for this reason.

I have wondered to myself and to others where the other 50% of our
people are and what they are doing when we have these weak endings, and
the answer is like a >>WHACK<< with the clue-by-four. They are dressing,
under different circumstances in different locations, but that's what
they are doing, dressing.

The most shy of them are in their hotel rooms, either alone or in
groups. Those with a certain degree of guts are at Zingers or Goodtimes
(or worse, the LV Lounge). Those who are confident are out and about,
alone or in small groups.

We need to re-capture this part of our audience.

Everybody likes to party. Let's give 'em a party. Everybody needs to
eat, let's give 'em a meal. Our people love to dress up, let's give
them the opportunity to do so!

But anyway ...

Let's go over a possible Saturday schedule.

Saturday, April 28:
1:00pm Lunch With Ginger (slash) SBS Social
            6:00pm Happy Hour
            7:00pm Dinner
            9:00pm Entertainment options
           11:30pm Farewell Bash

Let me discuss each ...

1:00pm Lunch With Ginger (slash) SBS Social

This will attract a moderately strong turnout, even though it's a
daytime activity. The only wrench in the works for this is that the
planned venue (HM) is now closed. An alternate with bar, food and
similar comfort level will need to be selected.

Starting at 1:00pm, the usual LWG time, will give everybody time to
drink, eat, socialize, and get back in time to change and get ready.

The Big Evening<tm> would actually begin with ...

            6:00pm Happy Hour

.. and continue with ...

            7:00pm Dinner

I see a strong HH/Dinner, in a venue that's comfortable enough for
newbees, but not reeking of mothballs, to be the key to a strong ending
evening. I think that promoting this as a dress-up affair, with minimal
restrictions on dress, will help the turnout.

The HH gives a good dose of that Quality Social Time<tm>, lets people
assemble, and lets those who choose to be fasionably late be so. :)

The dinner has to be something that the majority of our attendees would
go to by choice. At minimum, a choice of well-prepared entrees, none of
this "all steaks prepared medium" drek, with at least one option for
non-carnivores. If the dinner does not sound appealing, many will choose
to skip it and make other plans, which will almost certainly mean
skipping HH and postprandial goings-on.

            9:00pm Entertainment options

One option can be a big show. I don't see any single show that's
currently playing capturing the majority of DLV for reasons we've
discussed. A big show (or other ephemeral entertainment options) would
hold the interest of those who might be bored with, might just not like,
or might feel constrained with the entertainment du jour.

There can be other entertainment options as well, just so everybody
(or most everybody) reassembles for ...

           11:30pm Farewell Bash

I envision this in the same venue as the HH/Dinner. Those who choose to
stay put for the entertainment du jour are already there. This can also
be open-ended.
. . . . .

I ask all of you, is this something that you would attend?

If something like this is going to work as a maximum-turnout sequence
of activities, it has to appeal to the rank and file, plus it has to be
supported by us, the organizers and volunteers.

I think that the combination of the largest concentration of our
attendees (nothing attracts a crowd, like a crowd), good food and drink,
options for entertainment, and a liberal dress code will appeal to the
vast majority of the DLV contingent.

Comments?
. . . . .

Now a few other thoughts, thinking and speaking very freely.

One venue has emerged that I think will fit the bill for just such an
evening, and I think we need your opinions on this venue for this very
important seried of activities. This venue is Zingers, or rather the
expanded Zingers (I have been told it may be renamed CopaCabana) with
the addition of the restaurant next door.

There have been issues with Zingers, but in 2006 I heard very little in
the way of anti-Zingers sentiment from the DLV crowd. My feeling is that
very few, if any, would skip the big ending just for the fact that it is
being held at Zingers (or CopaCabana).

Zingers does exude a certain degree of scale and class. I don't think we
would have any skip it because it's too downscale of a venue.

Zingers is known as a GLBT-oriented club. I have not, however, heard
from any DLV people that it's "too alternative" for them.

Having one or more options for extramural entertainment would break
things up for any who might feel antsy about staying in one place all
night.

I can't think of any better place to host such a thing.
