dlvorg New Dates, Changing DLV, etc

Hi

I wanted to make a few comments about some of the comments that we are
seeing in the discussion on DLV date changes.

The decision on reviewing the existing dates and changing them has been
made and it has been made with a significant majority, well above the
66% required. (30-3?). That decision is over and bitching about the the
fact we are considering new dates is now a mute point.

While I personally would have not necessarily been that affected by the
hotel prices I can see that it is obviously a major issue with many of
the attendees. Quite frankly the ONLY LOGICAL thing to do is (at least)
to review the dates and look at changing if a consensus can be achieved.

It is clear that one or two people are being directly impacted by this
date change, having committed to a vacation slot or made booking etc.
Maybe this will lock them out from attendance if they can't change their
vacation slots. Assuming a Nov 30 decision there is time to try and make
changes.

Consider this that some of the people who may have wanted to go to DLV,
may have been "locked out" when the original dates were chosen and now
can go. Some win; some lose.

As for the dates:

The dates around (either side of Easter look like real possibilities.
Here in NZ there are national holidays on Good Friday and Easter Monday,
and the April 25th of the following week is also a holiday. Means from
my perspective I can travel to USA on Thursday 13th, and leave on the
23rd with only 5 working days missed. While I am a contractor and
vacation leave isn't a biggy, it is for Susan. As a contractor it
minimises my "non earning" days considerably. :-)

The biggest cost for me isn't so much the cost of the trip but the loss
of earnings! So a change of date round Easter looks like a good move!

There are downsides for this date...the obvious one for being the week
gap to N+I. This effectively makes N+I a no go this year. I can live
with this.

In fact I'm comfortable with most dates, except as I've said, those in
the first week of April, but seems like thatıs a no go for several org
people so doesn't seem very likely.

I'm also very comfortable with delaying DLV in to May. Having been to
Las Vegas for 10 or 11 of the last April / May's my impression and
experience is that the weather at this time of year is changeable. Those
saying that May is hotter are probably on average correct however I have
attended DLV one week in hot temperatures and the following week has
been unseasonably cold. Whatever week we choose we have to take what the
weather gods give us. The later in May in some ways is better from a
timing perspective but equally there are no holidays during that period
to prey on (from and NZ perspective).

Hugs
Michelle
