dlvorg Do we reschedule?

Since we now have a motion and a second to reconsider, the floor is
open to discussion on the motion regarding the "do we reschedule?"
question.

For the time being, please steer your discussion toward the "do we?"
angle, as opposed to the merits of various alternative timeframes.

Please hold off on any "nominations" for timeframe as of this time,
should the current motion carry, this can be done, should the current
motion fail, these are moot.

I really don't think we can have an optimally successful DLV with our
currently scheduled timeframe.

I see cost and convenience as being the reasons we need to reschedule.

IIRC, there are about 140,000 available hotel rooms in the Las Vegas
area, with more than half of them concentrated in the Strip corridor. If
NAB draws 135,000 and 70% of them stay in a local hotel (yeah, I know
that some of them double-up, but most of them don't anymore) that's
90,000 hotel rooms, most of them right on the Strip, sold at premium
prices to guys who will expense them out and don't really care how
much they cost.

This means that yes, rates for the Strip hotels are already high for
the DLV dates and that rates for others will rise more than would
otherwise be expected as the dates approach.

Yes, we could concentrate on downtown and off-strip properties, but
I don't think that's what our people want.

There are also many other secondary effects. Planes to Las Vegas
over those dates will fill up faster, meaning fewer of the low priced
seats available.

Rental car rates tend to be higher when large conventions are in
town as well.

A large convention crowd in Las Vegas means things like longer waits on
line for taxis and restaurant seatings. Some shows (not all) sell out
more quickly when a large convention is in town.

And, as Michelle pointed out, conventions are often a "boys club" and
yes, crowds of horny and well-lubricated convention goers is not what we
want when we're in LV. :)

Anyway, please continue discussion from the "do we?" angle. When this
discussion dies down a bit we can call the question for a timely vote.

In the meantime I'll prepare a draft of a note to the general list
for review here.

Thanks, gang.
