Welcome:

We have more people on our organizational list than ever before. 32 as
of this writing (Thursday morning). I think we had about 10 on the list
last year. I've carried over most of the people on the org list last
year, plus I took the liberty of adding a few, kind of a gentle hint
that I think their input into the organization of DLV would be a Good
Thing<tm>. :)

Anyway, I would like to encourage everybody to actively contribute as
much as possible in the planning of DLV 2002. Don't be afraid to suggest
something that's new and different, maybe something you might consider
far out.

Another thing. It's ok to disagree. If you think that I say something
(or anybody says something) that's totally against what you think, don't
be afraid to say so.

Anyway, let's go to it, gang! :)

Getting things rolling:

I see this list coming out "weekly as needed", meaning a regular weekly
mailing unless the activity is very low, with mid-week mailings only in
the event of time-sensitive things or very high activity.

Let's plan to keep this list active until around Thanksgiving (USA, end
of November). We'll then summarize, and move any remaining discussion
over to the main DLV list right after the first of the year 2002.

We've got almost a year to plan DLV 2002, but as we found out last year,
it worked quite well to get the preliminary plans made by the end of
the summer, the schedule on the way by the holidays, and concentrate
on promotion and fine tuning between the holidays and DLV.

If we're gonna be making any major changes ... those with a meat cleaver
as opposed to those with a scalpel ... we should do those as soon as
possible.

I see the following on our "do it list" for the next few months. If
anybody sees anything I'm missing, please speak up.

1. Any final summarizing of DLV 2001.

2. Discussion of the length of DLV. Did we have the length about right,
do we need it longer, was it too long?

3. Days of the week and timing. Did the Wednesday-Monday timeframe seem
to work, or should it be tweaked.

4. General timeframe of DLV. (IMAO, again, the venue, Las Vegas, and the
approximate time, late spring, should be considered in stone.) Looking at
the calendar, Sunday, May 12, 2002 is Mothers Day, which comments say we
should avoid, and Networld+Interop (several people like to do both on one
plane ticket) is scheduled for Sunday, May 5, thru Friday, May 10, 2000.

5. General activity comments, suggestions, etc. We want to paint in
broad strokes at this time. We want to discuss what worked, what did
not work, which activities should be repeated, which activities should
be ash-canned, what new and exciting activities we can plan, yes, gang,
that overused cliche' "think outside the box" applies here. DLV itself
was very much outside the box when it first happened 5 years ago.

We have a lot of very good feedback about our activities. We don't want
to simply recycle DLV 2001, but those activities which were strong can
certainly be repeated, perhaps with some tweaking to keep them fresh.

We already have some suggestions for some (different) activities for
next year, such as a makeup workshop and boating/(water)skiing.

6. Publicity and promotion. Do the existing methods (web site, T*
event listings, support group newsletters, etc.) work, should we be
expanding promotion, maybe?

Ideas for new and different (yes, "out of the box") methods of
promotion.

7. Registration. Did you think the web form worked (better than e-mail)?

8. Yes, I guess we will, like it or not, have one more iteration of our
yearly endless-loop topics such as ...

  a. Meeting room.

  b. Special Group Rates<tm> at an official hotel.

  c. GLBT bars vs. "straight" bars.
...

I see the following timetable for our first-stage planning, setting
the length and days of DLV. I think it's very important to get that
done ASAP, so people can make preliminary plans and we can get on
the event listings, etc.

Now thru end of July: Discussion of the days/dates, length, timing,
etc.

August 1: Call for comments from general DLV list. Announce our
tentative dates, allow one month for comments and discussion.

September 1: Summarize comments, announce dates.

Comments? Discussion? Ideas? :)

Thanks. Yes, we definitely need local contacts. You (and others in the
Las Vegas area) can help out by keeping your eyes and ears open for
a number of things, including:

1. Shows and other activities that might appeal to the group. You will
most likely hear of these before word gets to most of us.

2. Club openings, closings, etc.

3. Merchants, vendors, etc., that would be of interest to our group.
These don't necessarily have to be t-oriented.

4. General Las Vegas news, especially that involving the GLBT scene.

Ok, be thinking of possible venues and where on a schedule similar to
the last DLV it might fit. We'll definitely be having DLV over some
weekend, and you can assume at least one day on each side of the
weekend as well. When we start filling in the schedule, you can see
where it would best fit.

>Hope all is well with you.

Oh yes, very much. :)
