Only 22 days Until DLV 2009!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Welcome:
We're now just three weeks out from the big event. Everybody
is excited and rightly so. Things are progressing smoothly
and falling into place.
Welcome to those who just registered or just joined the list.
We've had quite a surge of activity (registrations, list
joins) since our last mailing.
To answer the big burning question on the minds of many of
those who just joined, yes, you can still get in on DLV,
and things look much better for late-registrees than in
previous years.
The one thing you will need to do without any hesitation is
make your travel and lodging reservations without delay.
Hotel room rates are still amazingly low and availability
is still good!
If you have not registered, please do so immediately as
you need to hold a validated registration as of midnight
tonight to get in on the first round of activity sign-up.
See activity sign-up notes below.
If you need a "roadmap" of what you need to do to attend,
look on line at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/roadmap.html
. . . . .
We have a few validations outstanding. Please get these in.
If you're in any way confused about this, write in and
explain.
. . . . .
One other important note here. E-mail is not a perfect
medium. If you ever send anything to DLV and do not see
some kind of result or get an appropriate response,
please accept our apology and resend.
In a worst case, if your e-mails appear to be ignored or
you get "bounce" messages, send to our "emergency" e-mail
address at: dlvemergency@yahoo.com
This "emergency" account is not checked frequently, so
please use the main DLV address(es) unless there are
problems.
. . . . .
As far as numbers go, estimates for a total turnout are still
converging in the 150-165 range. Remember that you will never
see the entire group in one place at one time. Both the Welcome
Celebration on Monday and the final dinner on Saturday are
expected to draw around 100 of our people.
. . . . .
There have been a few concerns raised over the past week or
so, one being a general confusion about the way things work
at DLV.
Yes, we are very different from the other TG events that you
may be familiar with. If you don't understand anything, do
let us know, the sooner the better. You can ask questions on
the DLV Discussion Forum (http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlvdisc/)
or by e-mail (dlv@geekbabe.com) if you don't want them to
appear in public.
Most confusion can easily be cleared up by reading the main
web site (http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv) and the mailing list
archives (http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/dlv09arc/).
. . .
Another concern was the lack of details, in particular the
locations, of our activities. No, these will not be posted
in public. (If you need to know why we don't post this stuff,
write us, we will explain in detail.) However, this information
will be made available to all validated attendees in a number
of forms.
Some of this information appears on the activity sign-up
screen. The bulk of the information on the activities
will appear, in great detail, in the final schedule that
comes out in the Large Final Mailing, about a week before
DLV. In addition, this year we will be handing out a hard
copy summary schedule and activity map at check-in.
If you need to know any information that's not obvious
to you, write in and ask.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Activity sign-up:
Newcomers in particular, please read this section very
carefully, as it explains something that we do quite
differently from other TG events.
Within the next few days, everyone who holds a validated
registration as of Saturday evening, April 18, will receive
a special activity sign-up e-mail.
Please keep an eye out for this.
IN THE EVENT YOU HOLD A VALIDATED REGISTRATION AND DO
NOT RECEIVE YOUR ACTIVITY SIGN-UP MAILING BY TUESDAY
EVENING AT THE LATEST, SOMETHING IS WRONG AND WE
NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT! If this should happen,
e-mail dlv@geekbabe.com and explain that you were expecting
your activity sign-up mailing but have not received it.
This special e-mail contains a link to your own personal
activity sign-up screen, where you can tell us which of
the many optional activities you want to do.
Space is limited for some of these activities, and for most
space-limited activities it will be first signed, first
served, but in some cases it may be first paid, first
served. See the activity sign-up screen for the particular
activities for details.
If you change your mind about anything, simply go back to
the screen and change your selections.
If you will be attending as a couple, the sign-up screen will
cover you both, and you can choose different selections
between you if you wish.
Another note along this line, if you plan to be hanging out
with another attendee, or a group, please don't feel like
you need to be glued together and do absolutely everything
all the same. Sign up for what interests you, not just what
the others are doing, please.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Deadlines and cutoffs:

Monday, May 4, at about 11:00pm CDT will be the cutoff for

for the Limo Tour. Sorry, due to difficulties collecting in
the past, this will be a hard-stop deadline with no exceptions.
Payment may be made in person at any major DLV activity on
Monday. Those not arriving at DLV prior to this deadline
should make arrangements with someone who will be present
to make payment for them.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

On the activity front:
A few notes regarding some of our many activities:
The SO Get-Together has been set for 2:00pm on Tuesday of
DLV week. Location to be announced. All SOs, including male
SOs and nontraditional SOs are welcome. Thanks to Bob (yes,
Bob) for setting this up! :)
. . . . .
"Star Trek, the IMAX Experience" has been confirmed for
Tuesday's Movie Night. Showtimes have not been announced
yet, so keep an eye on the working schedule for the
exact timing of this activity.
. . . . .
We have a few unusual activities on Friday.
For those into role-playing, we have the Murder Mystery
Dinner Theater where guests can take an active role. A
very nice prize, a makeover from Glamour Boutique, will
be given to the winner (the first one who identifies the
murderer).
. . .
After the Murder Mystery we have the annual Pity Party,
which includes the traditional amateur show. Please see
notes on the activity sign-up screen if you wish to
perform.
. . .
After the Pity Party we have our second annual Acoustic
Jam Session, which is expected to run well into the wee
hours of the morning. No charge! Bring beverages if you
want them. Bring your instrument too. You can specify
your instrument on the activity sign-up screen. There
will be a Designated Driver available at the conclusion
of this activity.
. . . . .
Besides the Dinner Theater, we have two other dining
options for Friday evening, one "affordable" and the
other upscale, as well as other activities. See the
activity sign-up screen and final schedule for further
details.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Dining notes:
Michelle (NZ) sends in the following WRT two of the dining
activities for Tuesday and Wednesday of DLV week:
TUESDAY : Eating Out Night : Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak &
Stone Crab OPTION
The OPEN TABLE site describes Joe's as follows:
Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab - Las Vegas writes...
Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab is the culmination of
a partnership between Lettuce Entertain You, ICON and Joe's
Stone Crab, the legendary seafood restaurant of Miami Beach.
Joe's features an extensive selection of seafood, flown in
fresh daily, to complement the world's finest Florida Stone
Crab claws. Joe's features the signature 16 oz. Bone-In Filet
Mignon and 22 oz. New York Strip Steak. Matched with Joe's
famous side dishes, dinner only gets better when capped with
a slice of key lime pie. Enjoy generous cocktail in the
bustling lounge or the tuxedo-clad service of the clubby
dining room.
Dining Style: Fine Dining
Cuisine: Seafood, Steakhouse
Neighborhood: Caesars - The Forum Shops
Menu: View menu on restaurant's website
Price: $50 and over
Website: http://www.icon.com/joes/
Michelle's Comments: I dinned here last year, by myself and
was well looked after. The food was excellent and there was
a wide range of options available... too many in fact! :-)
This place has a bar towards the front of the establishment,
off to the right as I recall where I would suggest we meet
for pre dinner drinks. I will see about booking a number of
tables for groups of 4, 6 or eight rather than one big table
although all in the same area.
The reviews of Joe's indicated that food is rated as
OUTSTANDING. You should expect to be paying $50+ for
dinner plus drinks, tips and extras etc.
While the site expects Casual dress, however I expect most will
be be SMART CASUAL / BUSINESS / EVENING DRESS standard. This
activity will be limited to twenty people on a first come
first sign up basis, although if demand warrants the limit
will be reconsidered.
As of this time I'm expecting that you will be at or over
capacity at 20. If we do get one or more dining options for
Tuesday, this may be alleviated somewhat.
. . . . .
WEDNESDAY: TREVI Italian Dinning
The OPEN TABLE site describes Trevi as follows:
Dine with the Gods at TREVI (Formerly Bertolini's) At the
crossroads of divine shopping and casino magic, you'll find
TREVI, a new Italian Restaurant, that is Vegas' answer to
Romanesque elegance and dining excellence. TREVI will
transport you to the piazzas and streets of Rome with café
dining surrounding the 'Fountain of the Gods.' TREVI'S menu
features homemade Italian cuisine, pasta, chicken and vea
prepared with true TREVI flair. TREVI tempts you to visit
Rome without leaving the action and excitement of Vegas far
behind. TREVI located at the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace &
is open for lunch & dinner. .
Dining Style: Casual Elegant
Cuisine: Italian
Neighborhood: Caesars - The Forum Shops
Menu: View menu on restaurant's website
Price: $30 and under
Website: http://www.trevi-italian.com
Michelle's comments: DLV has been dinning at Trevi (and
Bertolini's) in groups for the last 4 or five years. The
post DLV survey have generally rated this EON activity
very highly.
IMHO, last year the Trevi staff exceeded previous years with
a very high personalised level of service (individual checks,
payment, well organised service); I was very impressed. The
suggestion was raised to make this a bigger activity and so
we have the Trevi dinning night, a chance to dress up in
formal evening wear for dinner before partaking in the DLV
Las Vegas Limo tour leaving from close by at 9:30pm.
We will be meeting in the downstairs bar area before
(probably) eating in the upstairs area overlooking the
"Fountain of the Gods". This is an Italian style restaurant
with very good reputation and from DLV experience a very high
level of food and service.
Happy hour is 5:30 to 6:30 and seating will begin at 6:30 to
ensure that all those going on the Limo tour are finished and
ready in time. Post dinner activity WILL include a group photo
out in front of the fountain and then a parade of sorts to the
Limo pickup point.
Sign up is required so Trevi can organise the staff, service
etc to meet the group's size and timeline. Please ensure you
do everything you can to arrive before the 6:30pm SEATING time.

Big Sister Program:
If you're new and a bit uneasy about attending and appearing
in public, here's how we can help.
It's natural to be nervous before heading to an event such as
Diva Las Vegas, particularly if you've never been out before or
if you're new and don't know any of the others yet.
Big Sisters are volunteer DLV veterans who are standing by to
help as needed, either prior to DLV, or during DLV.
Big Sisters are intended mainly for those who are new and don't
have much public exposure, or those who may be feeling a bit
uneasy about the upcoming trip, but Big Sisters are available
to anybody who wants one.
If you haven't been out in public at all, if you're new to public
exposure, your exposure has never been in the mainstream before,
or if there's any reason you feel uneasy or uncertain about the
upcoming trip, the Big Sisters are here to help, either before
DLV, during DLV, or both.
Before DLV, if you would like to correspond with somebody
one-to-one about concerns regarding DLV, just send a brief
note to bigsister@geekbabe.com and say that you would like
to get in touch with a Big Sister. Examples of concerns might
be questions that you don't feel comfortable asking on one of
the mailing lists, request for an honest fashion critique,
etc.
If you are uneasy and can't get the nerve to walk out of your
hotel room (this has happened), phone us, we'll have a Big
Sister meet you, assure you, and escort you if necessary.
If you're new and don't know any of the others at DLV, the Big
Sisters will gladly introduce you to the others and help you
get acquainted.
If you would like to be put in touch with a Big Sister, just
send a note to bigsister@geekbabe.com and we'll get you in
contact with one.
Also, if you have attended DLV in the past and would like to
volunteer to spend some time helping others, please say so and
volunteer to be a Big Sister. (Just reply to this mailing or
e-mail bigsister@geekbabe.com and state you would like to
volunteer to be a Big Sister.) The primary qualification is
the desire to help others.
You can also sign up to have a Big Sister, or volunteer to be a
Big Sister on the web as you register.
If you have any questions or concerns about any aspect of the
Big Sister program, Nora, our Big Sister Coordinator, invites
you to contact her directly at: cadnild@aol.com
Big thanks to Nora for coordinating our Big Sister Program!
