Only 210 days left, gang!

September-October updates:

Well, gang, it's now October. We're just past the 1/3 of the year mark to
the next DLV and things seem to be falling into place quite nicely.

As you see, the schedule has already taken a skeleton form. We've got
about another two months to do the major planning before we throttle
down the efforts over the holidays.

I would like everybody to please look over the schedule (see notes
below) and think of what activities you would particularly like to do
and what open timeslots would be best for them. For example, golfers
(Michelle, Margeth, Julie(s)) please be thinking of what day would work
best for golf. Those who are big on sidetrips and such, think of what
you would like to see and when. As you will see, most daytimes are still
open, and there are even a couple evening slots as well.

Also, I would like to ask everybody who is local to Las Vegas to please
keep your eyes and ears open and let us know of any local happenings
that may be of interest, such as new clubs, clubs closing, any new
shops opening, or anything you think the group might be interested in.

First draft of schedule:

Beginning with this mailing, we will be including the latest in-progress
schedule, which is currently being discussed in the DLVORG list.

Items with the three asterisks are "highly tentative" and those without
are "tentatively in stone". :)

There are still quite a few holes. Suggestions are welcome.

An ongoing list of suggested activities and events is also included. It
appears right after the in-progress schedule.

As always, everybody here is most welcome to participate in the DLVORG
list. Just hit REPLY if you want to be added to that list and say you
want to receive it.

Halloween at the Tropicana:

>Hi, Annie.

>I picked up this link when I was searching on the net for Diva Las
>Vegas. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Interesting. Thanks. Quite possibly those close to LV, or those who have
an excuse to be there will want to check it out. Tropicana is reputed to
be one of the most GLBT-friendly on the Strip. I noticed that an evening
gown (or tuxedo) counts as a "costume" for admission. :)

Fall Harvest:

If anybody is gonna be at the Fall Harvest get-together this month in St.
Louis, please look me up, as I'm planning to be there. If you don't know me
by sight, some recent photos are at: http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/nwr.html
and a close-up is at http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/bio.html

I won't be staying at the official hotel, but I'll be at all the functions.

Hotel Internet access:

(edited somewhat)

>Sprint has been wiring hotel rooms with Internet-enabled LAN
>connections. When the Aladdin opened last month, there was broadband
>connectivity available in every room, dedicated computer terminals in
>the upscale suites.

>At Treasure Island at the Mirage, 300 hotel rooms have the Sprint
>Internet link, and business has been good. A guest needs to provide a
>his own NIC card and RJ-45 cable. The user browses to a locally-served
>webpage, enters credit card information, and pays $9.95 for a 24-hour
>connection. You're guaranteed 350 kbps, you can burst to a meg and a
>half.

>At the Aladdin, all the floors are wired with the capacity to get a
>gig/sec, and there's an OS3 {sic} out of the building itself. There's
>one hell of a lot of connectivity at the Aladdin.

>Sprint isn't the only carrier to be partnering with hotels, and most of
>the newest upscale hotels are wired with Cat5 cable into all the rooms.

>High-speed Internet access for travelers is a rapidly increasing
>market. Even some of the newer freeway-side motels are bragging about
>broadband.

Possible snag in the works:

From the _Las_Vegas_Sun_ ...

>Kenny Kerr, longtime star and host of a female impersonator show at
>Jackie Gaughan's Plaza hotel-casino in downtown Las Vegas, is fighting a
>legal battle with the current landlord of the Plaza Theater over the
>cancellation of his show.

>The Kenny Kerr show, which has played at the Plaza since August 1998,
>ends its run Saturday. Mike Nolan, the Plaza's general manager, said he
>isn't aware of the show's next venue.

That's the bottom line, if anybody wants to read the full story ...

http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/gaming/2000/sep/22/510806071.html

This may or may not be of any major concern to us, since Kenny has
changed venues and revamped the show countless times since they opened
at the Silver Slipper back in 19{mumble}. I'm sure by the end of the
year they will have settled in a new home with a fresh show. Saturday is
LV's big show nite, so it's almost certain Kenny will be playing, just
not at the Plaza.

People who saw Kenny during DLV2000 said the show appeared to have
slipped a bit, and was not well-attended. Back in 1999, I thought it was
a very strong show, and it played to a mostly-full house. I know (IMAO,
that is) the Plaza has slipped quite a bit over the past several years,
so this may be a good thing for Kenny.

Kenny's show has appeared at the Silver Slipper, Frontier, Sahara,
Stardust, Continental, Debbie Reynolds, and the Plaza. I've been told
it's the oldest still-playing FI show in the country.

I first saw the show many years ago when it was a fill-in show at the
Stardust while they were changing their feature production show from
Lido to Enter The Night (also now closed). Their longtime venue, the
Silver Slipper, had been recently razed as the Desert Inn Rd underpass
was constructed.

It's not at all unusual for a show to change venue in Las Vegas. For
example, Siegfried and Roy began at the Tropicana, IIRC, moved to the
Frontier for a while, before finally landing at the Mirage.

Anyway, let's keep on top of this. We should know where and when Kenny
will be playing within a few months at most.
